The secrets are simple rules, easy to remember, but challenging to achieve. Gyles Brandreth found them when he set out on a journey looking for happiness and ended up in the psychiatrist's chair - with Dr Anthony Clare. Who gets to be happy? These are the big questions that Gyles Brandreth aims to answer in this little book. Research from Manchester University and University College, London shows that happy people live up to ten years longer than unhappy people.

This book is not yet featured on Listopia. I am admittedly, on the fence after reading something like this 66 pages was less than an hour investment. The book fails to mention that in each of the 7 scenarios, unlike in real life where a guy who seemingly has a lot going for him has a few challenges arise. It just so happens too, that he is also writing a book based on scientific observations as he experiences them - which, are better described as more "Overly" Optimistic, less Reluctant. Albeit, with a strong lean towards effecting the outcome and giving his conclusion s a positive spin, making the book pleasant - causing more readers to pass on his work, he should be optimistic.

The salesmanship of his ideas is what was needed and impressive. By my sociological observations, we have become blamers and complainers. Specifically my generation, who have an inherent expectation that if things fall apart, they'll work themselves out and if they don't, "I'll get help. I am not sure if the author has realized, as I immediately did, he is selling a 50 volume library of Encyclopedia Britannica almost 20 years in the Digital Age where Grandmaster Google has all the answers.

I prefer the hardbound encyclopedia any day, I am also unconventional and find happiness in occasionally holding a book filled with endless statistics and facts - I also live in the grey area in nearly every corner of my life.

The black and white answers offered in this book don't fit well in my color scheme. Gyles Brandreth became the thirty-seventh person on 17 June to deliver the Baggs Memorial Lecture at the University of Birmingham. His lecture was termed — fabulous, brilliant, wonderful, transformational, thought-provoking, inspiring, excellent, entertaining, etc. When people tweet and retweet garbled versions, he realized he had to write a book. And the result is The 7 Secrets of Happiness!

In the book, the author takes you through What Makes You Happy? The secrets of happiness are available to all. Remembering them is simple but mastering them is hard. It is a truly inspiring book, one not to be missed. May 10, Lisa added it. Gyles Brandreth argues that this is the only book on happiness that you will ever need, and I think that he's probably right!

This is a great book, and I am certainly going to buy it and have another look at the seven secrets when I feel depressed. This book has been criticised as being simplistic and full of platitudes. However, they may seem simple, but I can assure you that they're difficult to apply! He includes lots of interesting anecdotes and tips from royals and celebrities. I am going to Gyles Brandreth argues that this is the only book on happiness that you will ever need, and I think that he's probably right!

I am going to find Prince Phillip's tip especially useful, because of my tendency to be self-absorbed. Whatever you are doing, be aware of it and stay involved.

It is much better that way. And, finally, if you want to be happy. Act it, play the part, put on a happy face.

I have lots of friends. Sex can also make you happy: I like to have a great deal of sex. Preferably in front of a mirror with rows of my favourite teddy bears lined up to applaud me. However, my very good friend Ann Widdecombe says she is very happy not having sex. What we can agree on, though, is that anyone having sex with Ann is likely to be very unhappy. Prescribing happiness is fraught with difficulties, because what makes one person happy may make another unhappy.

My very good friend President Bashar al-Assad recently told me that using chemical weapons against his own people made him very happy. My very good friends, the Syrian people, said that chemical weapons didn't make them feel very happy.

I have some experience of this in my personal life. Losing my seat at Westminster was the worst day of my life. Most other people I speak to say it was one of the best of theirs.
