The plot was good and kept my interest - I finished the book in one day. The locale was well described and inviting. I was enjoying the believability of Heartshot until the "reveal" scene, where it lost me. The situation Bill was in was totally unbelievable to me, and frankly, the lengthy flight scene with the descriptions of the various gauges and controls of the plane was boring, as was the conversation with the air traffic controllers and the other pilot. It was a solid 5-star read for me up to that point. Despite my disappointment with the flight scene, I enjoyed the rest of the story immensely.

I liked the characters. The local flavor was evident and the premise was great. I also appreciate a clean read. There was minimal coarse language. The f-word was used only once. There was no sexual content.

Scavengers

There were no graphic descriptions of violence. I will buy the next in the series and would recommend this title. If you are looking for a series to satisfy between Walt Longmire books, look no further. Fortunately, Gastner is always in the background when Estelle becomes the protagonist, teaching, supporting, and providing back up as Estelle tries to balance work, marriage and kids between solving murders. These books also have companion audiobooks, and best of all Rusty Nelson, in a class with George Guidall, reads the Gastner audiobooks! Still Havill gives us wonderful treats with his prequels i.

Best of all a new prequel is coming out soon! As other reviewers note, early clues make it pretty obvious who the perp is and basically how he is operating. And that made the book drag on quite frankly, why can't Bill and Estelle see this sooner? But the descriptions of how he knows the towns people and he really has no other life, and does not want one beyond patrolling in is spot on correct.

I would hope the next book is not quite so obvious as to plot resolution and moves a bit faster, oaky this is not the Jet series by Russell Blake by any stretch. Hopefully we will learn more in the next book about other members of the department, this pretty much focused on the sheriff, the under sheriff, and the detective. Unlike many other 'thrillers' aka Russell Blake and Ted Kelly, there is no outrageous gunplay or ten minute body count pile ups.

And from that stand point tis is a lot more realistic, think Andy Griffith as Sherlock Holmes. One person found this helpful. I enjoyed this book until the end, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.

Gastner/ Posadas County

Undersheriff Bill was foolhardy in getting himself into a dangerous situation with the killer up in the air with no back-up. It was unbelievable how such a supposedly experienced and smart cop got himself cornered like that. Then the scenario with Bill flying and landing the plane as a total novice was exciting but still I suspended disbelief.

One character I do admire is the hardworking and no-nonsense Estelle. For the most part, I like the series because I grew up in Albuquerque and my sister lives in Las Cruces. Reading about Posadas makes me nostalgic about my time in New Mexico.

I really love this series of books. Makes one want to see and experience New Mexico.

Nice to finally read a book where the characters seem like real people with real jobs, real personal problems and a real way of life. No fancy Hollywood characters or money regular people don't have--just a couple main characters trying to deal with their crazy busy jobs, have a life sometimes, and solve some complicated murder mysteries.

The book series is very well written and interesting. If you are a fan of Walt Longmire stories, then these Bill Gastner, Undersheriff, books will be a favorite also. The flavor of these stories are similar to the Longmire ones. Smarts, a understanding of human nature and a little slick does the job.

Heartshot takes place in Pesados County Utah. Bill Gastner is the Undersheriff. Set in the west with but in this century; you have the unique problems of being in ranching territory but with some big city problems. Although the county is near the Mexican border illegal immigrants are rarely a subject in the series. This series actually will have to series in one. The "Bill Gastner" part which ends when he retires but don't worry he will still be around which I believe is 9 books. Then there is the "Posadoes County" series which will center around his female homicide detective "Estelle" who becomes the Undersheriff after he retires.

Write a customer review. Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. This is an extremely well written book. A small, fictional desert town in South-Eastern New Mexico, very near the Mexican border, is the setting of several homicides. The characters arise from the page and come to life. The plot is tight and engrossing.

Our heroine is an Undersheriff of Mexican descent, capable, thorough, and thoughtful. In the pictures painted in this novel she and her small town become as familiar as your neighbors and your own neighborhood. She and a staff of support people scratch and scrape to find and analyze the few clues available. Calling this book a 'page turner' would be a gross understatement! However, I discovered http: I predict you will read more of his books. I'm not sure why this title was chosen. Other than that, I enjoyed reading this light mystery.

I have read two books by this author and found that among the hundreds of "free mysteries and thrillers" these books are among the best of modern authors. That being said, they don't quite measure up to Tony Hillerman's novels about detecting in the desert. On the other hand, I recommend Havill's books for a decent and enjoyable few hours of reading. I might note that the star rating system here is really misused by lots of reviewers.

Very few books should receive the 5 stars; I mean, can you give some romance story but a mediocre author the same rating as a book by the best authors of the past? I felt a kinship to the characters and an understanding of the surroundings. Coming from Las Vegas I was from the big city. But many of our relatives lived in ,and still do live in ,small villages. They live the quiet simple lives that are a struggle to get through each day.

This book truly brings back so many memories. To see what a difference a few miles can make in a life. Writer did an excellent job of capturing the time ,the characters and the events. I felt like I was there. Perhaps because I did not begin this series at 1 and started at 10 I don't share a previous reviewer's dislike of the change in lead characters. I actually enjoyed having a different prespective and dedicating this book to Estelle. Perhaps the next 12 will belong to another of the Posadas County contingent
