The Cutting Edge: A Suspense Novel

"Deaver's approach excels in THE CUTTING EDGE, the 14th novel to feature Lincoln and his assistant, Amelia Sachs Deaver keeps the level of suspense high.
Table of contents

We have the usual serial killer, the Promiser, this time, who apparently wants to kill engaged couples. The case is referred to Rhyme, who begins the investigation. Cut to the serial killer, who is Deaver-baroque of course. Many minor characters turn up, including an insurance investigator--a British gent, who was once a cop, and has a thing for cryptic crossword puzzles. And then we have ecological issues and natural disasters.

Killings continue, while a B story breaks out. Murder, mayhem, blood, much ado about diamond making. I had a hard time finishing this book. It feels like a ghost writer took over and slapped Deaver's name on the cover. Positively sealed the fate for me when the author used exclamation points throughout the chapters. No way would Lincoln Rhyme's character an exclamation point.

His last book was a disappointment; now this one was too. Not sure if I will purchase any other books by this author even though the ending of this book sets up the next one. A diamond cutter is murdered, along with two of his young customers. So, we learn a little about how the diamond trade works. When Amelia walks the scene she learns that two possible witnesses are missing. One had a meeting just prior to the murders. Since he has his own point of view, we learn this is the diamond cutter's assistant, Vimal. A subplot is Vimal's relationship with his father, also a diamond cutter, who wants Vimal to follow in his footsteps.

Vimal has other ideas. Soon, the term kimberlite becomes important. There is some digging going on in Brooklyn where a geo-thermal project is going on Kimberlite, the stone diamonds come from was found there. But, apparently, a gas line is cut and two people are killed, forcing the city to shut down the project. We thought we were dealing with a psychopath who had something against young couples who were defiling the earth by misusing diamonds.

Cutting Edge by Ward Larsen

A little past midpoint Deaver throws another wrench into the works. A lawyer asks Lincoln to research the case against his client, a notorious Mexican drug smuggler, El Halcon. For some reason Lincoln takes the case, earning the enmity of law enforcement operations who want El Halcon put in a maximum security prison. Okay, the last doesn't seem to have anything to do with either the diamond murders or the geo-thermal digging.

When I first read it, I thought it was an unnecessary sidetrack.

See a Problem?

But it's just another one of Deaver's wild twists and it leads to the resolution of the whole case. As I said, this isn't an ordinary mystery, because we learn something about diamonds, but just when we think we know who did what, Deaver adds another character at the end who planned the whole thing. I had no trouble keeping track of these people; I just thought there were too many masterminds involved. And the last one may have been a cliffhanger, an attempt to get you to read the next book.

It's a kind of threat. There's never been a better story teller than Jeffrey Deaver. This author has never failed to impress this voracious reader. I am continually amazed and astounded that his books are forever better than the last one. The Cutting Edge was another wonderful story with more twists and turns than a roller coaster ride. If you're not reading Deaver you're missing out on one of the best authors of contemporary mystery and fiction in the world.

From a voracious reader in foggy San Francisco who's anxiously awaiting his next book. Too many things happening. Earlier books much better. I have been a big Deaver fan for a long time and have read all of his books. This one was disappointing, to say the least. It meandered and at times I felt lost as to what he was trying to weave into the book. There was very little of Lucas and Amelia and more on a witness which actually bored me. I continued to read the book hoping it would get better, but it didn't. See all reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Published 2 days ago.

The Cutting Edge

The first half of this novel clearly rates 5 stars. Then, the story gets complicated to the point of being almost totally unbelievable. The ending is even more disappointing since it leaves so many questions unanswered. What began as an exciting novel of intrigue ended up as a big disappointment. Maine is thousands of miles from where the accident occurred but before Trey can get some answers from the nurse, military-trained assassins kill her and then turn to hunting for DeBolt. At its core, this is a story of people thrown into a situation not of their own making, forced into fighting for their lives.

Well-drawn characters, a twisty and often unpredictable plot, non-stop action, and an intense cat-and-mouse chase all combine to build suspense and keep the tension building. Readers will find it difficult to set aside before turning the final page. This mesmerizing tale leaves readers with much to consider. Feb 19, Lisa Malmquist rated it really liked it. This is my first book by Ward Larsen.

I enjoyed it so much; I now want to read all of the titles in his Assassin series. I hope that this becomes a new series, and looking forward to book number 2. Aug 18, Al rated it liked it. The story centers on a navy rescue diver discovering why he is being hunted by all manner of bad guys. The first 3rd of the book is very interesting. However, as the story progresses towards its conclusion it seems to fizzle as one chase scene piles up on the next. The most glaring flaw of the story is the lack of a good villain. Now, there is a big baddie who Trey must vanquish, but the antagonists are largely weak and this never puts 3.

Now, there is a big baddie who Trey must vanquish, but the antagonists are largely weak and this never puts the outcome in any doubt. This is a good opening to what will undoubtedly have multiple sequels. Here's hoping they better this story. Feb 12, Amy rated it it was amazing. Wow - that was a whirlwind thriller! This novel felt like a modern twist on a classic spy thriller.

You need to see what happens when a straight laced, adrenaline hunting, Coast Guard rescue swimmer wakes up with high-tech superpowers! It exceeded my expectations. This book sounded much more unique, and thus I was excited to read something different. On the flip side, however, this book was a let-down. Maybe it was simply because my expectations were so high that I expected more.

The book was good, the pace was good, but I just felt it was somehow lacking. Feb 13, Helen rated it it was amazing. Human brains implanted with computer chips, wi fi senders and receivers and as the name implies totally cutting edge technology. But like all wonderful technology there is always some misguided fool prepared to exploit, kill and pervert the abilities that made it possible.

Thoroughly enjoyed this read. Mar 26, Jill rated it liked it. I did not like this book nearly as much as the author's Assassin series. I struggled through parts of the book but eventually did finish it. I didn't connect with the characters, and I was not that interested in the overall plot. I do give the author credit for trying a new character. The book ended as though this book could be the first in a series. Intense and amazing Love this authors books , I have read many and they are all incredible from the first words as the chapters grow the web of the story and characters start to interlace one page at a time.

A Coast Guard rescue swimmer wakes up with a big scar on his head and some weird, extraordinary mental abilities - which he'd better figure out fast because unknown people are trying to kill him! Meta Having read all of his earlier works, this felt a little odd. The story line was well written, but the ending fell short. Feb 19, Kathy Stibal rated it liked it. I won this book through Goodreads. It was fast paced and hard to put down.

Kept you engaged to last page. Ward books are always a good read. Wish it would have continued on, it could be expanded to another book. Then a series of explosions take place, believed to be earthquakes in the heart of Brooklyn. However, as always with Deaver novels, the plots can go topsy-tuvy and contain wheels within wheels: The other main feature of Deaver novels is just how much research into technical details of one specific subject is undertaken before he begins writing. This was prob a 3. Lincoln Ryhme and Amelia Sachs are on the hunt for a murderer that has struck in the diamond district. But it becomes clear very early on that something is just not quite right with the picture and for once I was able to pretty much suss out most of the major plot lines.

Which can mean only one thing. Either Jeffery Deaver is slipping or I am getting really good! Sadly much as I would like to take credit I don't think I can This was prob a 3. Sadly much as I would like to take credit I don't think I can. I love to suss out who did what when and how how and thus far Jeffery Deaver has always alluded me. In this new tale, they are set against a plot that has many cover ups included to not give away the real reason or what is really going on with all these crimes in this book. Seriously though, I have to ask first. Does anyone not read the Lincoln Rhyme books and not see Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie in the characters while doing so? Not that that is a bad thing. It's just where my mind goes. The crimes are against people who are getting mar Wow!!!!

The crimes are against people who are getting married. It has something to do with the mining of diamonds and the fact the perpetrator wants those diamonds whole, just like they were in the earth, not cut up and worn on "miserable fat fingers of rich women". Someone is killing engaged couples and brides to be. There is absolutely no way to figure out the end with all of this scenario. The reason, exactly, that I love Jeffery Deaver's books. You just never know where all these little hints are eventually going to take you.

However, his father had another idea for him. Hence, a familiar theme placed in the book to create empathy. The action is relentless and the criminals are as well. With diamonds, there is a lot of money at stake and everyone wants their part or maybe that don't want some parts. One would be a recently found diamond mine in the middle of New York City. This book kept me guessing for hours!!!

All the expected characters make an appearance in this, the fourteenth Lincoln Rhyme thriller. With more twists and turns than a sudden mountain switchback, readers will find themselves targets of inspired misdirection. With both the brilliant and the dark sides of the diamond industry revealed, tension mounts and the narrative unfolds in unexpected ways while providing just enough backstory for readers new to the series. Well-written and intriguingly plotted, readers will find it difficult to set this one aside before turning the final page.

Deaver went through a slump a few books back, in my opinion, and then bounced back. This was another dip for me. It ran through all the motions: It just never rose above what we've read the other twenty times. Mediocre Deaver is still good and I've been wanting to read a new Rhyme for a few months now, but I couldn't help but be a little disappointed. The biggest complaint I had about th Deaver went through a slump a few books back, in my opinion, and then bounced back. The biggest complaint I had about the book is that the ultimate plot seems so ludicrously complicated that it defies belief.

It wasn't "Let me come up with this ingenious plot that will misdirect that greatest detectives in New York" it was "Let me do something really bizarre and complicated so that this writer's readers will be tricked into thinking it's a clever novel". When the strings show that bad, it's not clever, it's simply bad puppetry. Still nice to visit with the characters again. Aug 05, Michael rated it really liked it. When you pick up a Deaver penned book you pick up a text book. No, not one of those boring things you fought to keep your eyes open while reading for homework but one that's a delight to learn from.

As an example, in this book we learn about diamonds, the mining of them and the process of making them into the pretty baubles that cost oh so much. I prefer the more brilliantly colored stones, emeralds, sapphires and especially rubies, but then they are my birthstone and the only precious stone I' When you pick up a Deaver penned book you pick up a text book. I prefer the more brilliantly colored stones, emeralds, sapphires and especially rubies, but then they are my birthstone and the only precious stone I've ever owned.

We also learn a bit about earthquakes and the different types of vulnerability from the earth shaking on one coast to the other. I subsequently read the book and to this day I cannot read a book with Rhyme as a character without seeing him in the Washington incarnation. She's so well described by Deaver that I see her as a fair skinned ginger, tall and fit save for her arthritis. But as I said, that's an aside and not meant to influence your mental image of either Rhyme or Sachs. Justin Patel is one of the best diamond cutters in New York City.

Well, he was until he was killed in an apparent robbery. As were two of his customers who came to buy an engagement ring. Death did them part even before the wedding. And Patel's part time employee walks in during the robbery and is shot. Here it comes, my mantra, read to the book to find out what that means. If you are familiar with Deaver's Rhyme books, or his Kathryn Dance books, you know that little is as it seems.

Twists and turns abound and there are more leaps for you to focus on than hurdles in a meter hurdle race. In case you're wondering that's 10 hurdles, the same as in a or meter race but you see my point. Answers come quickly but then not all answers are correct. Why I remember once in an engineering course I was taking. Suffice to say that there are answers and red herrings. I am not much of a fish eater but why are red herrings worse than, say, orange or purple herrings?

There is adventure and tragedy and success through adversity. A typical Jeffery Deaver book, and all well done. And there's an ending to this novel. What does that mean? If you are a Deaver fan and you haven't read this book, what are you waiting on? It's as good as any of them. Apr 20, Jerry B rated it really liked it. We sometimes complain that these tales can be overly formulaic, often wasting dozens of pages with dreary lists of minuscule clues.

Indeed, the basic tale mostly involved the diamond cutting business — and as an aside, we learn a fair amount about that craft and the politics involved. Meanwhile, a killer seems to be going after engaged couples buying diamonds until the plot shifts to explosions or mini-earthquakes presumably being caused by a geothermal drilling site in Manhattan. While Rhyme and Sachs still play their usual roles, the differing points of view, subplots, and surprises led to an outing we almost rated a precious five stars! Mar 11, J. Dehart rated it it was amazing. Since then, I've sped through several Lincoln Rhyme stories.

The Cutting Edge takes what we readers know of Deaver's work and maximizes it. There is tension and suspense, of course, but this title packs an additional and surprising pathos. The story takes turns, veers, and twists, as Deaver's work does, and the result is gripping and far from stale. This is the kind of reading that will echo if y I first encountered Jeffery Deaver in his treatment on James Bond, the novel Carte Blanche from This is the kind of reading that will echo if you read it right before sleep.

Recommended for those seeking thrills and tension from a writer who knows what he's doing with it. This one had quite a few more twists and turns than most books. Just when you think you have a grip on who the bad guy was you realize there was more going on. And then there is Lincoln, who we know is super smart, but with this book learned is also super sneaky. I just wish that he had filled Amelia in on what was going down. I am a bit worried with how this one ended.

It seems there is going to be an epic show down, I really hope that Lincoln and Amelia, along with their team, are up to it. On This one had quite a few more twists and turns than most books. On a side note I loved how Lincoln was able to support his friend during his rough time and how the dad redeemed himself at the end, really didn't think that was possible.
