OMG, this book is a riot. Can't say I've laughed as hard as I am while reading this one. Of course my sense of humor can be a little coarse at times. On top of it, this book is well written and edited.

I loved the snarky remarks about sparkly vampires and stick-thin actresses, and who hasn't wanted to rip off Mr Collins' and Lady Catherine's heads? Jun 22, Teresa Williams rated it did not like it. I just paged through the majority of it. The only reason I got it was because there was a movie made of it, I thought, and it was free. Don't waste your time. Mar 07, Cassia rated it it was ok. The idea of Regency England full of vampires - Elizabeth Bennet being the most fierce and foul-mouthed of them - is amusing. Exhilarating having the Bennet sisters swaring like sailors, but why do they have to think and talk like contemporary chits? A contemporary setting would have more sense.
The novella is also episodic.
There is a sequence of scenes, more than a real plot and the finale is quite abrupt. One of the less interesting reading of so far. It is hysterical, stupidly, snarkily hysterical.

Club gave the film a C, commenting "That this particular retelling of the Jane Austen novel feels like a Cliffs Notes version is understandable; that its zombie bits are equally rudimentary, though, is more disappointing. The result lacks bite—the one element that zombies and Austen should have in common.

This is a vaguely amusing idea which somehow got stretched out to an entire book, which somehow became a best seller, which inevitably means it had to be made into a film. The characters would have been allowed to breathe for a beat in that case. Here, the action and violence take up the space that would have generally been used for character development. Well, they won't find any here. But this overly busy riff on Austen's winning formula doesn't justify all the tinkering.
Literary scholar and Austen professor Devoney Looser stated in Entertainment Weekly magazine her opinion that the film's first half, and especially Matt Smith's Mr. Collins, were comic, jarring, and enjoyable. She assessed the film overall with, "I laughed a lot and I shrieked. I'd give it a 'B'".
