The book has a nice cover. The reader might have some difficulty extracting the humor from the book. However, other readers may not and find the book okay to read. Having had our share of troubles we are no strangers to the reactions that come when life throws a curve ball. Callaway has simply reminded us of the lessons we continue to learn--that laughter is, indeed, good medicine. This book isn't just a whimsical collection of events from the author's life. It is an assortment of wisdom bites that he has learned while facing the trials of his wife's illness--of how God showed him the importance of laughter in the face of those trials.

The page manual is written in short stories complete with an appropriate Biblical moral for each story. He shares the triumphs and failures from his childhood. He walks us through the joys of courtship, marriage and parenting. And he pulls no punches during that period of time when he isn't sure his wife was going to survive. Most of all, he shares God's amazing steadfastness through it all--his love--his patience. We are reminded that God never walks off stage, leaving us alone in the spotlight.

Laughing Matters is liberally decorated with hilarity and sobriety arm in arm and doesn't allow the reader to sit in any form of pity party for long. As we read this book together, my husband and I were in the midst of trials of our own, and yet, Mr.

  7. A highly recommended read. He is Harpo Marx if Harpo spoke, but instead of honking the horn, Phil is touching my soul along with my funny bone. Just today I read something of his and I had the urge to squeal with delight at how "on" he was to the human condition, me laughing at someone else's foibles. Then, with the perfect twist on the humanity, he had me seeing myself. You could do a lot worse than buying this book, but I'm not sure you could do much better.

I have just finished this book for the third time in less than two weeks. It sits atop my nightstand and I haven't had enough sleep because I've been reading the darn thing so much. I think that Callaway's perspective on life should be bottled and sold by telemarketers and the world would be a better place. The book tells us how to "learn to laugh when life stinks. I won't recount how awful the last year of my life has been, but this book has, I believe, literally saved my life.

Callaway tells his own story of his wife's health troubles, of a deadly disease in his family, and of the challenges of life and death. He does so in such a warm and witty way that you can't stop reading.

I thank God for the gift of this book. I cannot look at the cover of this book without a smile crossing my face.

Laughing Matters: Learning to Laugh When Life Stinks

Laughing Matters has given me a much-needed boost and a "faith-lift"! With warm and at times hilarious stories, Callaway shows not tells us how joy works in our lives. He does this not from some high platform, but by sitting in the snow bank with us and putting an arm about our shoulder. Too many books look at things clinically. This is no laboratory look at laughter, this is a 5-star picture of how joy can come to life for us.

I've ordered a DVD from Callaway's website and 6 copies of this book for our small group. I loved the book and am still laughing. I read 1 chapter a day during my devotions and I don't know that I've ever had so much fun with God. Phil's book was uplifting, inspiring, and just plain fun. I quote it often and have recommended it to several people. I can't wait to read his newest book, To Be Perfectly Honest. See all 9 reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Buy this for a Swayze fan and you will be very glad you did. This is a fun read - it really is amazing how well the Swayze quotes and the Tao complement each other. Who'd a thunk it? Part of the fun of reading this book is remembering the movies from which the quotes are taken, and the author provides a nice summary at the end of the book in case you don't remember. Last year I saw Phil's standup show live in our community's Pentecostal church.

His rapid-fire, manic delivery left the audience chuckling - and in the lobby he laughed and carried on like everyone's favourite country Uncle Phil. No, success hasn't gone to his head! This book's a good place to start. Here you can laugh and cry and celebrate life with Phil and his wife, his kids, his smalltown and his bigtime friends - all in one glorious jumble sale of good, honest, homespun humour.

And that laughter is a gift from God. Aug 28, Mark Archibald rated it really liked it. That's how I'd describe Phil's sense of humour. It's far too entertaining and insightful to be cheesy.

But folksy describes well his small town simple life kind of charm. He tackles heavy issues and calls us to continually give all things to Jesus. Phil leaves me thinking bigger and with better perspective. Easy to read and challenging to live out. Never be afraid to try something new.
