Prepared for Rage: A Novel

Stabenow draws her characters sympathetically, helping you understand and occasionally even sympathize with the bad guys. The book takes place over the course of several years, so a lot of things have to be put into place in order to build up to the denouement and conclusion. By the end, my heart was racing and I closed the book with the feeling that I will pick up more by Stabenow.

I understand some people seem put off by what they perceive as Stabenow's liberal politics, but I really didn't see that in this book. She seems very aware and concerned by the continued threat of militant Islamists even if she is somewhat critical of the U. And you can't fault the woman's research - there is a ring of authenticity in this book, even if it's sometimes overdone there are many, many secondary and tertiary characters with names like Bill and Mike, who don't matter much, if at all, to the story.

I've also heard that a lot of hardcore Stabenow fans weren't thrilled with this book - but I came to it not having read any of her traditional mysteries, so I don't have those to compare it against. I liked that this book was not one of those huge Clancy-esque thrillers and I'll definitely pick up more by Stabenow. Jun 21, Mike Finn rated it liked it Shelves: This time we track the slow, indirect but inevitable intersection between Abdullah literally servant of God a rogue cell of Al Qaeda, a Coastguard vessel in Florida, and the Space Shuttle.

Although some of the characters are the same as in "Blindfold Game", "Prepared For Rage" works as a standalone novel so feel free to dive right in. Dana Stabenow makes "Prepared For Rage" more than a terrorist threat thriller by using it as a vehicle for topics she is passionate about. She staunchly defends the value of the Coast Guard, this time highlighting their role in the Katrina aftermath the Coast Guard were almost the only Federal Agency to provide immediate and effect assistance. Her admiration for them is surpassed only by her anger at the Federal agencies that did nothing to help.

Dana Stabenow's long standing love affair with space travel see her Star Svendotter books surfaces in a vivid evocation of the astronauts preparing for one of the last post-Challenger Space Shuttle missions. That's pretty much the end of the positive emotions. The FBI, apart from a couple of dedicated but almost disregarded individuals, are shown as inept and crippled by political appointees.

The lack of security of US ports is laid like an indictment at the feet of the administration. For me, the best part of the book was the portrayal of the Al Qaeda terrorist at the centre of the book.

Prepared for Rage

While some of the main American characters where as shiny and perfect as American dentistry, the Al Qaeda leader of Abdullah was gritty, twisted, broken and deeply troubling. Dana Stabenow shows us a clever, ruthless, dedicated man, who knows how to recruit people to his campaign and use them to whatever is necessary, regardless of the personal cost. He is an educated man with skills that would allow him to prosper in the West and build a life for himself but who is driven by his mission even when following it means giving up his life to it.

The fact that he is disciplined, charismatic, introspective and brave doesn't win us over to his side, it just makes him a more formidable enemy.

As far as plot and suspense goes, this is an above average thriller that kept me guessing and enjoying guessing right to the end. The passion with which Dana Stabenow writes gives the book more power, although, oddly, the most realistic and engaging parts of the novel are not about the Americans trying to do the right thing but about the terrorists who move with such deadly purpose. Lorelei King does a great job as narrator on this book, managing all the changes in tone and accent perfectly. Aug 19, Davisburns added it.

Have I read this or just downloaded it? A terrorist with a most personal grudge, an FBI analyst challenged to be three steps ahead of the intelligence, a Coast Guard captain assigned to keep watch on that very American of symbols from the water, an astronaut who ta Have I read this or just downloaded it? I was already familiar with Stabenow's Kate Shugak mystery series, set in Alaska, but this thriller is a completely different sort of book. There is tons of action, a fair bit of violence, global politics, and, of course, sex. We follow several characters here: Cal is captain of the Coast Guard cutter which is currently patrolling the Caribbean and will be I was already familiar with Stabenow's Kate Shugak mystery series, set in Alaska, but this thriller is a completely different sort of book.

Cal is captain of the Coast Guard cutter which is currently patrolling the Caribbean and will be the lead ship in the security around the launch of the space shuttle Endeavor that Kenai will be on. Patrick is desperately trying to find out Isa's real identity and figure out what he is planning, and uses resources outside his usual government one to try to get this information.

Isa, meanwhile is single-mindedly moving toward his ultimate goal, taking advantage of opportunities that arise and keeping his plans tight to his chest until the last possible moment. This book keeps things moving and there is never a dull moment. It was a great listen! Aug 26, Pam rated it really liked it. I picked up this book because I recognized the author's name. I've read a couple of the books in the Kate Shugak mystery series by Dana Stabenow and I enjoyed both the mystery, and their setting in Alaska. This book is not part of that series. In fact, it is quite different.

I find this one to be more of a thriller with 3 separate story lines: We also follow the CIA as they hunt for a terrorist cell across the globe. The story starts slowly and builds to an exciting climax. The main characters are well defined, and as the plot lines converge we understand just how much that moment means to each one of them. I found this to be an interesting and satisfying read. Jul 03, Stephanie rated it it was ok. Intersecting stories about a terrorist, a strong woman astronaut, the Coast Guard captain who begins a torrid affair with her, an FBI guy, blah blah blah.

Terrorist event is to shoot down the space shuttle on which the astronaut is about to ride, Coast Guard guy is on the ship observing and protecting the launch, you get the idea. Predictable, way more than I wanted to know about Coast Guard ships etc. But I finished it and it held my interest fairly well. Or at least with the idea that it would be a movie one day Mar 19, Charles rated it really liked it.

This is an exciting suspense novel about a terrorist named Isa and various CIA and Coast Guard characters who get involved in stopping his attempt at an Evil Deed. The characters are pretty well fleshed out and the plot is one those that tracks various threads until they all come together in a decidedly edge-of-the-seat ending. They are considerably more interesting than this novel because of the setting Alaska and the complex and compelling protagonist. The characters in Prepared for Rage are too competent and mentally healthy! The novel ends in such a way as to promise another one about some of the same characters. I think perhaps D. Apr 16, Marti rated it liked it. I found this interesting, but not nail biting and hot.

Perhaps I have read too many thrillers before this, but it seemed somewhat plodding at times. Having the Coast Guard in the plot is interesting--a little different. Kenai seemed very one dimensional--couldn't see her having a love interest which would compete with her astronaut life. Hopefully, al Queda, etc. It did get better in the second half of the book. Mar 12, Sarah rated it it was ok Shelves: I was really bummed that Stabenow decided to capitalize on the whole terrorism mania in her latest mystery.

Or should I say "thriller"? Sure, she managed to get in a few decent jabs at the Bush administration, she's certainly no Ted Bell , but the whole thing was unnecessary. I read her novels for the unique Alaskan bush setting and unique characters. How many "thrillers" being published now feature terrorists from Pakistan or Afghanistan and a plot against a prominent U.

Far too ma I was really bummed that Stabenow decided to capitalize on the whole terrorism mania in her latest mystery. Far too many, and it was disappointing to see Stabenow steep to that, good intentions or not. Set against the latest space shuttle ready in Florida.

Apr 05, Cheryl S. I didn't think to check if this was another in the Kate Shugak series when I ordered it and it's not. I thought I would like it anyway, but unfortunately I didn't like it at all. No humor or vivid characters like I'm used to and way too many confusing middle eastern names.

See a Problem?

I was expecting a lite, fun read. I'll remember to check the next time. Aug 16, Pbwritr rated it liked it Shelves: Good for the hospital once I was able to concentrate. Plain from the beginning that the Pakistani man in the prologue is bent on revenge, but it didn't make sense that it was against the U. He has set in motion a plan to destroy the next space shuttle as it launches and nearly succeeds. The Coast Guard doesn't get featured prominently in the fight against terror, but gets top billing in this book. It didn't start too well for me, but picked up as the book progressed, and by the end I was caught up in it.

Mid-east terrorists aren't exactly a new theme, but I still found it interesting. Feb 24, Kirsten rated it really liked it. A great fun read. The characters were alive and believable. And the plot line was suspenseful. I'd never thought about how easy it would be to shoot down the shuttle - but I can see how it would work. This was a great thriller - from the pen of the author of the Kate Shugak mysteries.

Makes me want to pick up one of her mysteries now. I'm not sure why, but for some reason I didn't get on with this as well as I did Blindfold Game. It had some good moments, but I never did figure out why the chief bad guy was motivated to do what he did, and I have to confess that the bits I enjoyed were the cameos from the characters from Blindfold Game.

My 96 year old mother-in-law just finished Less Than A Treason and is hoping for another before she heads to the big library in the sky. I have read all the Kate Shugak books and am waiting for a new one soon? Will it be out soon? You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Twitter account.
