The side story regarding a year-old orphan, Elvira, was a delightful distraction and showed Jason at his best, especially when he confronts Elvira's unscrupulous uncle and guardian, Eustace Lawton. It was nice to finally have Jason and Rebecca declare their love for each other but this most definitely is not a feel-good romance.

Their estrangement was well portrayed and every sympathy went out to the heroine. Otherwise it was an entertaining enough read if somewhat protracted. If the hero has an affair with someone else's wife for years, is not upfront with his wife as to his motives for marrying her, is then cruel and unkind to his wife and runs off to commit adultery I was waiting for him to take responsibility for his actions and to show that he actually truly feels remorse for what he did. Unfortunately, Lord Clayborne does none of that, if fact, he only feels sorry for himself - and to top it off, his long-suffering wife agrees with him! They deserve each other. The title might give the impression that this is a lighthearted read, but his inability to say "I'm sorry" left me angry and disappointed.
The interesting premise of the story was completely wasted. I can't understand why there are so many good reviews about this book. I like many of Laura Matthews books I skipped several pages at a time, since the story dragged on and on.
The hero was not likable at all. He accused the heroine in the beginning of being unfaithful and held on to this opinion without seeking for another solution. He also punished the heroine by being mean, cold and petty How can that be? On top of that she is subservient and meek while he treats her badly. Really I don't understand how she went back to him in the end, and how she accepted his excuse just like that. And accepted on top of that, that he cheated on her with his ex-girlfriend without any word of accusation herself! Rebecca married Jason Clayborne and one day the marriage was over.
He told her she was not a virgin and did not say why. He would not believe her when she said she had been with no other man, She didn't even know how he knew this. He leaves her alone most of the time at the estate. He went back to his old lover and she finds out about it. She tells him she is probably going to leave him. She gets her backbone up and moves away with an old friend.
