Hatered of any kind is deplorable. For people who hate you can feel nothing for them, for pity is wasted on the stupid. There is no greater sin the world that stupidity. For stupidity lays at the root of hatred. Hatered breeds violence and senseless deaths. Both men in this book were unforgivably stupid. Daudet for his hatred and Charcot for the heavy price for trying to reveal the mysteries of the world through exploration. Mar 07, Luke Devenish rated it really liked it.

Gilded Youth: Three Lives in France's Belle Époque

Only one of these three entwined lives here was admirable. One of them was a nasty shite of the first order. The other was just a daft, well-dressed waste. Excellent little history of very stylish, very loaded times. Considerable echoes with our own. Not always a compelling book - because of the dislikable leads - and yet still a rewarding one for several standout sections: Adele going barking in the Bahamas; Leon's dad rotting away with the pox; Zola proving himself one of the few worthwhile human beings in this whole glitzy sewer. Glad I read it. Decenni che vedono crollare il mondo dorato della loro giovinezza e le certezze che, nel loro ambiente intellettuale, sembravano consolidate: Appartenevano a una generazione che era passata per gli estremi: Sep 11, Denis rated it liked it.

Chambor's book is a delightful read for anyone interested in French history and in the legendary "Belle Epoque", that has been used in so many novels and movies, especially because the author intelligently deconstructs all the myths about this era, and vividly depicts a country facing multiple storms, problems, and issues that will lead it to an apocalyptic war. The clever idea to achieve this through the destinies of three specific people who are quite representative of the contradictions of their times works wonders, and the events Chambor describes are wonderfully evocative. Dozens of characters cross paths and dozen of stories are intertwined, some of them quite intense and haunting as the horrific Dreyfus affair, which unleashed a wave of antisemitism over France , all of them fascinating. But Chambor doesn't succeed in all departments: Furthermore, Jeanne Hugo, the grand-daughter of the famed writer, seems to have escaped Chambor: This is a bit frustrating.

But overall, Gilded Youth brilliantly brings the past back to life, without falling into the traps of nostalgia. In fact, the book isn't restricted to the Belle Epoque, and the pages on the XIXth century writers, or on the decomposition of the thirties, are equally well written and interesting. Sep 27, Jaylia3 rated it it was amazing. It tells its stories by examining the lives and families of three childhood friends whose fathers or grandfather were luminaries of their time, celebrated for their achievements in literature and science.

With the world rapidly changing as a new century began, the three friends struggled to adjust their lives. Jeanne Hugo, the beloved granddaughter of Victor Hugo, had trouble adapting to a world where she was no longer the center of attention simply by virtue of being a Hugo. Leon Daudet, son of author Alphonse Daudet, became a writer like his father but his writings were more political than literary, endorsing anti-Semitism, the restoration of the rule of kings, and the re-elevation of the Catholic Church.

Jean-Baptiste Charcot was my favorite. I enjoyed this book enough to buy my own copy, even though I started reading it as a library book. I know I will be referencing it in the future.

Mar 23, Daniel Swanger rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Reading this book, Gilded Youth, explains how and why this happened. From the defeat and disillusion of France after to the younger generations' hopeless quest to equal or surpass their elders, the jeunesse doree of the French Third Republic's fate is recounted here. The descent from gentlemanly politics to outspoken out-of-control verbiage and political disaster are parallels to our current US primary election battles facing us now. But in the case of the children and grandchildren of the top genii of France, the descent is from disillusioned politics and social history to total war, sounding familiar to us with the current international terrorist threats to our own way of life.

Could France still survive another conflict with its culture intact just as France collaborated somehow knowing it could not at that time culturally survive the Second World War after the First World War and the Franco-Prussian War with the Siege of Paris? Read this amazing tale.

The descendants profiled here are those of Victor Hugo, novelist Alphonse Daudet, and Jean-Martin Charcot, one of the first professional neurologists and mentor to a young Sigmund Freud. Jul 15, Emily rated it liked it. This book is ostensibly about 3 different people, but except for the beginning chapters, I didn't really get a sense of biography from it.

I think the author uses them as a way to highlight that period of time, because it read much more historically than biographically. I had trouble getting engaged from the beginning because she opens the book with a story about the murder of Jean Jaures. I doubt anyone but French history or socialism scholars would know who Jean Jaures is, so that was an odd choice for an opening of a book, where you want to hook the reader in. My favorite parts were the stories of Charcot's I think?

Pep Guardiola Fernando Trueba Conversaciones sobre el futuro

In general, I got the sense from this book that it was a repackaging of the author's doctoral thess, and while I am sure it stood strongly on its own as an academic work, I'm not sure it makes for the best pleasure reading. Mar 16, Ed rated it liked it. I enjoyed this book.
