Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This is NOT a stand alone book. The only part I disliked was that it ended. But let's focus now on the sequel. Summary of this book: I'll admit, I was more than happy to revisit the characters and their mythical world. Ki'leah obviously grew in the two years that lapsed in her world since we last encountered her, and during this time she matured into a fitting ruler of her kingdom Si'vad.

However, once her father passes away, she finds herself and her kingdom caught in a web of deceit, lies, and A new evil is fast approaching, and Ki'leah has no way to prepare. War is on the horizon, and the young queen and her kingdom do not have the resources, the allies, or the experience to prepare for such a disaster. While Ki'leah still has friends in Britta and Erich, she finds herself otherwise completely alone, stuck in court making the most difficult decisions of her life while hoping to avert catastrophe and avoid prophecy.

And where is Breyvarian when Ki-leah needs him?! So, how does the sequel measure up? In my opinion, the plot was interesting and action-packed, but in the end the book left me with a multitude of questions and few answers.

I don't mind a cliffhanger, but I struggled reading through "The Northern Queen" because it dealt much more with brutal politics and court intrigue in comparison to the swift-moving action plot of the previous book. The chapters switched between scenes involving Ki'leah in the palace and scenes with Erich and Britta out fighting--and while this method of storytelling gave some needed shift in focus, the narrative was a little choppy. Little actually happens in "Northern Queen" to defeat the almost overwhelming tide of evil and misfortune that confront Ki'leah and her kingdom; in fact, the evil still remains and only grows larger and more terrifying right up to the last page.

Overall, I came away feeling that this installment of the series is mainly setting up the story for the next book, where the action will really begin. If you loved "Sorceress" as much as I did, you must read this book. Don't expect any sort of resolution or happy conclusion though.

This book is dark and will only leave you wanting more. At least we know Vandervort has another book in the works!

Without the promise of another sequel, this book would be unbearable--but fortunately there is a forthcoming addition to the series, so if you are a patient person, go ahead and enjoy the "Northern Queen" now. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful.

The only objection I have to this book is that I wanted more, right now. I can hardly wait for the sequel to come out.
