This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Jan 10, Joseph F. The Shahnameh is an epic that is worthy to stand alongside The Iliad, the Mahabharata, Beowulf and others. The epic is long; perhaps not as long as the Mahabharata, but still of considerable length. There are shorter English versions, but for those that just want to get their toes wet, there are some great stories from the book that can be read on their own. Three stories can stand alone: Davies and this book featured here. This story is my favorite of the three.

In the Dragon’s Claws: The Story of Rostam and Esfandiyar

Here an old distinguished warrior has a falling out with the Shah of Persia. The Shah's ambitious and brave son wants the throne to himself. How does a greedy king jealous of his crown get rid of his impatient but virtuous son: Our younger hero, Esfandiyar, is in a difficult place: The only solution is conflict. The results leads to much heartache where no one is the winner. This is a wonderful story and the translation is straight forward and vivid.

If you like this book, then tackle the other two I mentioned above. If you like all three, then you are ready to read the whole epic.

Oct 03, Lora rated it really liked it. This is a different translator, but equally as good as Dick Davis. This excerpt from the Shahnameh focuses on the great heroes Rostam and Esfandiyar in a kind of King Arthur or Chanson de Rolande type of confrontation.

It is quickly evident that we are in the presence of a great work of literature, admirably recreated for the modern English-speaking reader. The earth is teeming and the heavens thunder. Good luck to him who has.

May he be generous to those in need. The nightingale laments throughout the glade While the rosebud preens herself at his distress. Since clouds are sending down their wind and rain, I wonder why narcissus is so sad? The nightingale wakes through the darkest night. He laughs at wind and rain that set the rose To trembling in fear.

Snug in his perch Within the rose, he sings his song.

Meanwhile The cloud roars like a lion, as though he were The lover, not the rose. Winds tear his robe To shreds. Beneath the rose, what is it he laments? His great epic the Shahnameh, to which he devoted most of his adult life, was originally composed for the Samanid princes of Khorasan, who were the chief instigators of the revival of Persian cultural traditions after the Arab conquest of the seventh century.
