If the other, later two novellas, are similar to 'Childhood' they are certainly early Tolstoy a bit rough and experimental , but like reading any great writer's early novels they still tell you something.

There is more of Tolstoy exposed, more light shinning on the early stages of one of our great writers. Some of my favorite passages dealt with death death of his mother, death of his mother's servant and love. But I also loved Tolstoy reflecting on memory too: "Somehow I seemed to remember something which had never been.

I chose this book because Tolstoy is one of my favorite authors and because this edition is illustrated by Maurice Sendak. I thought it was okay but didn't quite meet my expectations. It doesn't have the same quality that Tolstoy's other works have, what Wilde called, "the note of pity" that exists in Russian Literature. The story is simple, a child going from childhood to boyhood.

It reminded me of The Issa Valley by Milosz, a simple tale told lovingly about the importance of family and place to a person's development. Everyone around a child affects his or her progression as a person, and Tolstoy conveys this beautifully. I don't think it's a children's book, really, but it's simple enough for a child to understand the main point.

It just wouldn't be entertaining for a modern American child. Overall, I recommend this book to fans of Tolstoy. I don't know that anyone else will really appreciate it. May 15, Sylvester rated it liked it Shelves: classic , , audio-book , memoir-biography. Not a thing. A failing on my part, obviously.

He was the fourth child of Countess Maria Volkonsky who Tolstoy does not remember, as she died after giving birth to his sister Mariya in and Count Nicolay Ilyich Tolstoy a Lieutenant Colonel who was awarded the order of St. Vladimir for his service. When Count Tolstoy resigned from his last post with the Military Orphanage, a marriage was arranged between him and Maria Volkonsky. It is now preserved as a State Memorial and National Preserve.

In recollecting their childhood Leo revered him, along with his mother, as saintly in their modesty, humility, and unwillingness to condemn or judge others. His other siblings were Sergey b. The Tolstoy House was a bustling household, often with extended family members and friends visiting for dinner or staying for days at a time.

The children and adults played Patience, the piano, put on plays, sang Russian and Gypsy folk songs and read stories and poetry aloud. A voracious reader, Leo would visit his father in his study as he read and smoked his pipe. Sometimes the Count would have young Leo recite memorised passages from Alexander Pushkin. The family home still contains the library of over twenty thousand books in over thirty languages. When not indoors, there was no shortage of outdoor activities for the children: tobogganing in winter, horseback riding, playing in the orchards, forests, formal gardens, greenhouses and bathing in the large pond which Leo loved to do all his life.

Beware of old translations, use this one instead! An epic that spans multiple intrigues of the lives of its principal characters. A story that is remembered for its immensity and scope and recommended to all of those who enjoy to read literary fiction.

I read Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" when I was in middle school at a time I was too young to really appreciate it as anything but an accomplishment that impressed my teachers at the time. And even though I read a ton of Russian novels in college, something about that early experience put me off Tolstoy I was definitely more of a Dostoevsky girl. At any rate, I spent the last couple of months reading "War and Peace" and it was absolutely marvelous I enjoyed nearly everything about it-- from the ins and outs of the family drama during peace time, to the descriptions of Napoleone's failed march into Russia to Tolstoy's musings on the nature of man and war.

Overall, just an excellent book. There's always a worry with such great works like this one that they won't live up to the hype. Everything is suitably grand, as is Tolstoy's style, and his prose is wonderfully easy to read as well. From there on in Tolstoy goes into historian mode, spending many chapters reiterating the same points over and over again, temporarily forgetting all about his characters. Some of that context is nice, but Tolstoy certainly over does it. If most of it were edited out then I might just give this work the full 5 stars.

As it is, just 4 will have to do.
