Fair is the Rose (Van Alen Sisters #2) by Meagan McKinney

Love, love, love this book! This is the sequel to McKinney's novel "Lions and Lace", and it's much, much better. Christal Van Alen is on the run when the "outlaw" Macaulay Cain kidnaps her. There's more than meets the eye, however, for both Christal and Macaulay.

Neither are who they seem to be. The sparks fly in this novel. It's a great love story. This is McKinney at her best! Mar 05, Katherine rated it really liked it. It was written well and the lead characters shared amazing chemistry. Apr 13, Melanie rated it really liked it Shelves: I enjoyed this book, but not as much as Lions and Lace.. IMO, the first half was better than the second, but there wasn't enough angst to make it as wonderful as Alana's story..

I did however enjoy Macaulay: Oct 10, Cherise rated it it was ok Shelves: Not sure about this one. No idea if it is just that I am not in the mood or I just don't click with the author. I know there are scenes that are supposed to stir. The first part I love. I suspected what will pan out but I do adore the living in the enemy camp thrill, the H is protective of the h right from the start and he is he typical dark and brooding type that I love. Same with another reader, I have a huge problem with the h Not sure about this one. Same with another reader, I have a huge problem with the h.

Though she is feisty and reasonable in her own way, I do get tired of her constant freaking out episodes and her inability to trust the H. I understand she understands him and thinks she knows how painful it will be for him, but girl you either deal with it or leave him. The stance she took baffles me, especially when she held out for so long.

The middle part is the most boring part. The only thing keeping me going is the other characters. I could care less what happened to the main ones as nothing really happens, same old same old till you are strangely lethargic to the supposed pain and emotional torture both endured. Ending to me sucks, especially considering this is the end of the series. I expected better, at least more of a reunion than this rushes dashing about. At least let me know they are gonna be ok and will be closer to the other couple.

I just can't see that hea here. Only thing I like is the H's total dedication and even that seems contrived and iffy at times when he seems just as puzzled and unsure of his feelings as us. So what actually pulls him to her? Just ruin it for me totally. I would have felt tons better if he is more sure as his behavior often suggested. The whole not gonna tell reasoning got so old and when the cat is out of the bag, it is not because the h felt she can trust the H or their bond but because she has no choice. The H's reaction is just as disappointing.

Neither trust and it seems ridiculous to talk about love when you don't have trust and respect. Also don't know her reasons for running away when she has a rich as croecus brother in law around. All in all, she seems she doesn't know what to do with herself most times yet her action states she is strong, just doesn't make sense.

The description is great, I can imagine the scenery and all, it is just the humans that are not making much sense to me, so much so that I cannot get into the story much. I just found out the first book rated higher here when the person recommending this book said this one is better. Now I wonder if I should read that one too, though not too interested in the setting or storyline. I am disappointed, read this author is great but she doesn't seem to be my cup of tea. El final ha sido precioso. Apr 08, Amanda Sheila rated it really liked it Shelves: Even though the atmosphere between first book and this one's quite different, I still liked it.

Though it's not exactly my favorite. Christabel didn't really get big portion in the first book, so I didn't really know her back then. But apparently she's a strong girl. I don't really like Cain though, he's a bit scary. But overall I enjoyed reading this book. Feb 22, Tango rated it really liked it Recommended to Tango by: A good solid " good guy gets traumatized girl" story.

Some good "chuckle" bits; a very little "family drama" involving an evil uncle; and a "happily ever after. Oct 03, Smita Magar added it. I am dying to read this book Asmi has been trying to send the book from US but, taking too long May 29, Cristina rated it really liked it Shelves: I kind of wished there would've been an epilogue. Nonetheless, a great story! This is the way I like my books- so immersed in the characters and storyline it takes me a day to read. I loved this book! Not as good as the first. I was very disappointed.

May 10, Star rated it really liked it. Interesting enough hold my interest even though it's a fluffy romance novel. Jan 11, Genieve Ong rated it really liked it Shelves: Tho I enjoyed it a lot the heroine is kind of a disappointment for me I don't require a heroine in a book to be always that smart woman, nor pretty, not even rich or brave ones actually I love meek and sometimes those quite and yes I like those scared ones too I can even appreciate a totally weak almost or really dormant of a heroine I don't mind it at all as long as she won't be stupid too stupid , overly stubborn, someone who won't seem to grow up or someone who always runaway from pe Tho I enjoyed it a lot the heroine is kind of a disappointment for me I don't mind it at all as long as she won't be stupid too stupid , overly stubborn, someone who won't seem to grow up or someone who always runaway from people who truly loves her and is willing to help her face the problem In this book my problem is the latter The heroine is always running away..

I understand her fear, the agony of knowing who's your parents killer but knows that people won't believe you and worst in heroine's situation because she had spent years in asylum before. I followed her story almost like the hero follows her and I was hoping for her to have a bit of courage to face the problem or at least let people like the hero and her sister to help her. That she isn't alone. It sadden me to see her so vulnerable and I keep cheering for her.

But it took soooooo long for her to allow herself to let the hero help her and things really got bad around her. Jul 08, Dr Goodreads rated it liked it. Started out really good but dragged on too much. In the end I was screaming with frustration for the book to end. Buen libro hasta la mitad Apr 18, Wild Rose rated it really liked it. How war scars people and how living scars us. I really struggled to get into this one and connect to the characters.

Luckily, the narrator Lisa Flanagan was very good! I am not a fan of Western Historical Romance, but there was a time where I read a bunch of them. Crystal is ultimately protected by one gang member, Macaulay Cain, who is view spoiler [actually a Federal Marshal in disguise, hide spoiler ] and falls in love with him. I'm not really a fan of Stockholm syndrome stories, and Fair is the Rose has all the markings of Stockholm syndrome.

Although, McKinney does a very good job with making it less creepy and disturbing because she allows Crystal and Macaulay to fall in love under normal circumstances. Or as normal as it gets. Bits of Scottish folklore weave their way into the story, giving it a truly authentic feel; the glossary at the end completes the picture. And can Rose ever redeem herself?
