I really liked that Ms. Brant doesn't make their relationship a central aspect of the story but does manage to intertwine it with the other storyline; allowing it to merge naturally and enhance the ending. Our secondary characters are a integral part of the story from the most visible to the ones we hear about.

Each one adding personality, drama, and insight to the story.

Unusual Suspects: Deadly Intent

Adam Raiker is a forceful personality that makes you take notice. Silent but deadly-he is a multi faceted man. We are given many delicious clues to certain traumatic aspects of his past but no concrete answers. I look forward to reading more about him in the future. Ellie Mulder, our victim, stands out with her tantalizing POVs sprinkling through out the story.

It was interesting how Ms Brant switches back and forth from the agents to the kidnapper and his victim-giving us a more well rounded storyline. The ending comes at you fast and hard. I never in a million years would have suspected the suspect or the reasons why. A tiny cliffhanger is left that allows for advancement of the over all arc and for our characters-showing us that this is not the last we have seen of them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to exploring the Mindhunters series more. May 15, MaggieReadsRom rated it liked it Shelves: When the book arrived, however, I went into a state of utter panic! So with no small amount of trepidation I started reading and hoped jumping into the series at book 4 wouldn't leave me too lost.

When Ellie Mulder, daughter of the wealthy Stephen Mulder, is kidnapped a second time —2 years after being kidnapped and held captive 22 months when she was 7— Raiker Forensics brings in their two most experienced investigators to find her. In a race against time to find the elusive mind behind the kidnapping and find Ellie, Macy Reid and Kell Burke are put in such close proximity that battling the growing attraction between them proves to be difficult and a little distracting. Macy Reid is a forensic investigator, specialized in linguistic forensics. She needs order and due to a traumatic experience in her past she has a light form of anxiety-driven OCD do things in threes.

Kellan 'Kell' Burke is also a forensic investigator. The secondary characters, both on-page and mentions are endless in this book. They were all needed to form a full-bodied suspense plot so in this case it really worked for me. A few secondary characters were very memorable to me. It was Ellie, the kidnapped girl. She was so strong yet vulnerable and broken. She never let her kidnapper get her down and fought, mentally, as hard and much as she could.

She was resilient and inventive and despite her predicament she kept her head cool, especially for a kid. Reading what she went through is not for the faint of heart and I wouldn't recommend this book to readers who don't want to read about child abductions or bad stuff happening to children. The romance is subtle yet intense. There aren't many love scenes, there's actually only one and it's not overly explicit or graphic but it's exquisitely written and complements the characters and the romance perfectly.

The scene in the shower was just mesmerizing! In fact this is the only love scene in the entire book and, though personally I would have liked more of them, Kylie Brant definitely made it count. I loved the bickering and banter between Macy and Kell. It added to the tension and chemistry between them and I was just waiting to see it turn into an explosion of passion.

Also, the humor in their banter, which made me grin regularly and sometimes actually made me laugh out loud, was a great counterpart for some of the dark and gritty parts of the suspense. The suspense had me all over the place with my own theories and suspicions and in the end I was partially right and I'm sure some of this suspense story line will be wrapped up in a later stage in this series. I do know I definitely am going to read the earlier installments in the Mindhunters series. Going by just this book it's a top-notch romantic suspense series.

It took the suspense from being just an enumeration of the actions taken in order to find Ellie, to a more dynamic and intriguing level. The beginning was very descriptive with a lot of investigating, speculations and retelling of procedural stuff but once that was out of the way I was mesmerized by the suspense and the chemistry between Macy and Kell. However, that being said, the tidbits about Adam Raiker and the mentions of main characters of the previous books have definitely made me push the first 3 Mindhunters books more to the top of Mt.

To get all the characters, their stories, the stuff the main characters went through, the suspense, the technical terms and procedures and all the other undertones of this book, you need to savor it and read slow and intently. To me it was a very nice introduction into the series, even if I started at book 4 and I am absolutely looking forward to read more by Kylie Brant. I have work to do. You thought I came in to play a little naked duchess and serf. I have to admit, the thought holds some appeal. You silhouetted against a thin sheet suspended before a fireplace.

And then the sheet falls. Her bones melted, and she leaned limply against him. And I sensed it in you the minute we met. Jul 16, Melanie rated it did not like it. Their close proximity brings back feelings that had been dormant since their one night stand months ago. For those who have read the previous installments of the Mindhunters series, you might be a little disappointed with this latest installment. Known for her thrilling and suspenseful writing, Brant felt short of the mark this time around with Deadly Intent.

The beginning is somewhat messy and difficult to get through. It is overtly descriptive, somewhat mundane and difficult to focus on. If you are a dedicated fan of police procedural novels, Deadly Intent may satisfy your craving for descriptive investigation. Unfortunately, I felt this journey taking me around in circles marking it extremely difficult to gain any ground or much interest. It was easy to become frustrated with how slowly things moved along.

The first half is a struggle but the novel does pickup somewhat in the second half.

Deadly Intent (Mindhunters, book 4) by Kylie Brant

You travel with Macy and Kell as they discovered all the new clues and all the dead ends of their investigation. In the midst of their work, Macy is forced to face the villain from her past. That is where the romance somewhat kicks in, but the romance in this romantic suspense is hit and miss. At some points it does not mesh well with the storyline and at other points Brant sneaks in bits that make you smile.

Brant does a good job of mixing in the romance and not putting the major case on the back burner. Still those moments are few and far between and even after all is said and done I was left wanting just a little bit more. Deadly Intent does feel like a filler novel because it sets up the cliffhanger for the next installment. Not every issue is resolved with the villain so there are a lot of loose ends left unfinished. Characters from previous novels in the Mindhunters series are brought onto the case for fans that are searching for any updates on their favorite characters.

Adam Raiker, or the man behind the forensics team has a secondary storyline in this novel that looks as if it will be explored further in the next installment.

The Mindhunters

But for latest novel, Deadly Intent, I would say you have to be a fan of extremely detailed workings of investigators and forensic experts in order to enjoy this novel. If you are looking for the simply driven, fast paced adventure, Deadly Intent may not hit the mark. Sep 13, Casee rated it really liked it Shelves: I love the Mindhunter series. Mindhunters Series

In Deadly Intent, we get quite a look into Adam Raiker and what happened into his past. It was almost enough to overshadow the story of Macy and Kellan, but not quite. I think that Kylie did quite a good job of not crossing over that line but also whetting our appetite for more Adam. Macy an I love the Mindhunter series. Macy and Kell are called in when an eleven year old girl is abducted for the second time in her young life. When she was seven years old, young Ellie was kidnapped and not recovered for over a year.

The police had given up on her when Adam Raiker found her. For that reason alone, the parents called in every favor they had to get Raiker Forensics allowed into the investigation. Their resources are considerable and Adam and his team are soon on their way to Denver. Macy is a kidnap victim herself and is horrified at the thought if it happening twice to the same little girl. She hopes that their team can help the local FBI with their investigation to bring Ellie home as quickly as possible.

The only thing that makes it okay is that Adam allows she and Kellan to do their jobs. Kell delights in teasing Macy and her proper British ways. For months she has been working on comebacks when he comes at her with a joke that she would usually stutter at. Unfortunately for her, this investigation brings them way closer than she is comfortable with. When the current case brings her to her past, Macy is surprised that Kellan is there to hold her while she falls. She can do nothing else but fall after facing the devastation and horror that she went through as a child.

While she hoped that she would help Ellie, in the end all she learned was that Kellan was not the man that she thought he was. The romance was definitely on the back burner to the suspense, but the sexual tension was so there because of their past. I thought this book was great, quite possibly the best in the series.

Jan 09, Ally rated it liked it Shelves: Forensic linguist Macy Reid is an expert on kidnapping, having been abducted when she was a child. She is the perfect investigator to be called in when a Denver tycoon's eleven year old daughter is abducted for the second time. But Macy's biggest stumbling block may be a member of her own team; Kellan Burke, the wise-cracking, rule- breaking investigator who relishes getting under Macy's skin, and who just may be the man to help her confront the demons from her past.

Another book reviewed by Tori Forensic linguist Macy Reid is an expert on kidnapping, having been abducted when she was a child. Another book reviewed by Tori at Smexy Books that I liked the sound of and I did enjoy the book however, I felt the book leant more towards the suspense and thriller side than it did to the romance side. Although I enjoyed it for this reason I felt a little let down that it was classed as a romance when the romance was secondary to the overall storyline and because there was such a lack of romance in Deadly Intent, it lost 1 star.

I felt the story in the romance aspect would have gone much better if Macy and Kel hadn't previously slept together before the book even started and they just had the banter, teasing and annoying each other part from the start of the story. However, Deadly Intent is the fourth book in the Mindhunters series and although I read this without feeling I was missing anything from the previous books maybe if I'd read the previous books I would have a better understanding of Macy and Kel's 'relationship'.

I really liked the overall storyline of a tycoon's eleven year old daughter being abducted for the second time and who had taken her and why and seeing Macy, Kel and others work out who took her and where she was. I liked Macy, she was smart, aware and interesting but at times she seemed aloof and annoying. Sadly, I didn't much like Kel. I can't pinpoint why exactly although he reminded me of Tony from NCIS at times he wasn't a bad character or even annoying I just didn't take to him, which lost another star to Deadly Intent.

I really enjoyed Ms Brants writing style and the set up of the story kept me gripped through the entire book if anyone disturbed me I quickly snapped at them 'I'm reading! Overall I did like Deadly Intent and would recommend it to any fan of suspense, thriller reader who likes a dash of romance added to their story lines. I also would happily read another Kylie Brant book! Oct 30, Bookaholics rated it really liked it. They are sent to help investigate serious and deadly crimes. Deadly Intent tells us the story of Forensic linguist Macy Reid who is sent along with the other members of her team to help when the 11 year old daughter of a Denver tycoon is kidnapped for the second time. Macy brings a special set of experience and knowledge to the case having been the victim of kidnapping as a child herself.

Kylie Brant does a good job of creating interesting characters and putting them in tense and serious situations that makes the drama all the more intense and action packed. The two main characters Macy and Kellan are interesting to read as they continue to fight their attraction to each other while also dealing with their own personal issues and the case that has brought them to the surface. Deadly Intent also has many sub characters that are appealing to read and makes you want to know more about them.

The only issue I have with this novel is that both the romance as well as the suspense were very slow to get going, and it took half the book before anything really happened which made it very hard to get into. Overall this is a first-rate book. This thrilling story was complex and suspenseful. Despite a slow start, once things got going it became exciting story. So much that it will make you want to read the rest of the book in the Mindhunter series. Because as it is, I found it hard to know how much time had gone by. While I know this was Ellie's second kidnapping, I felt the investigators wasted too much time going through list of suspects related to the first kidnapping By the way, I thought there would have been more links between Ellie and Macy's kidnappings But it wasn't and I thought that was a waste.

You give the heroine the perfect background to sympathize on such a case and you didn't carry it out.

I know Macy is a professional, but still. Also, a bit part of the investigation didn't make much sense to me. The first time around, Ellie was taken from a birthday party outside Kidnapping Ellie from her bedroom from a millionaire's house with so many security levels and all? It takes planning and money I'd think trained investigators would have recognized this. Oh and the resolution of the case? The "who" did it? Just very sad actually. Finally, the romance was meh.

I liked Kell because he was fun and a bit devious: However, I never really warmed up to Macy Oct 18, Robin Priddy rated it it was amazing.

The major story point - the kidnapping - was very interesting and I love love loved the little girl Ellie. She's been through the wringer that girl and manages to outsmart her kidnapper and even herself when push came to shove.

We got some revealing glimpses of Raiker's past and I hope her next book showcases him even more. He enters the room and you stand up and take notice! Kellan "Kell" Burke is a hard one to classify.

Not an alpha but not a middle of the road beta, he's still a man's man. He has a sad background but seems to have risen above it quite well. I didn't understand his attraction to Macy, and they really didn't click in my opinion as a couple. I liked her but I didn't love her. At times she comes across as emotionally detached and even cold. Kell would tease her in a suggestive way and she would flush and push him away. Hardly the reaction you would expect from an educated woman of the world, despite her harrowing experience as a child herself. A solid 3 for the kidnapping storyline.

If you like police procedurals this is a good book to delve into. Jun 08, Jeremy Goh rated it it was amazing. This, in my opinion, has been the most enjoyable read out of the first 4 books in the Mindhunters series by Kylie Brant. Forensic Linguist Macy Reid and Kellan Burke arrive at the Mulder Estate to investigate what seemed like a pure abduction, of a young girl named Ellie Mulder, but evolved into the investigations of homicides and even blackmail. Brant builds up her characters through witty dialogues within the story, which is one aspect of the series which makes it so compelling to read.

I foun This, in my opinion, has been the most enjoyable read out of the first 4 books in the Mindhunters series by Kylie Brant. I found the arguments and dialogues between Reid and Burke in the introduction hilarious and almost drama-like, something lacking or less obvious in her previous 3 books. The storyline and plot is enough of a suspense to keep me flipping through the pages up till the very end, so any suspense-genre fan would enjoy this book very much. And I kinda already had some kind of idea who did it from the very beginning of the book.

I won't mention who, but it meant that the ending wouldn't have much of a twist to leave a long lasting impression on me. But a 5 star book nonetheless. I love Kylie Brant's Mindhunter series Maybe it was seeing more of Adam Raiker and getting to know more of his backstory. I am digging on the new storyline Brant is weaving through the books involving Raiker and his former torturer's son. The mystery in this book had me hooked from the very beginning.

She was the bravest 11 year old in the world, and I just wanted to die anytime something bad happened to her. I enjoyed it, but it seemed to be in the background of all the other things going on in the book. In the other three books of the series, the romance was a little more balanced with the mystery. Risa Chandler's prescient dreams of death and murder haunted her nights. They also proved invaluable for Adam Raiker's brilliant team of forensic criminologists, the Mindhunters, until a tragic end to one case shattered Risa's confidence and drove her into seclusion.
