Sid James's early death in at the age of 62 sent fans into mourning. The last in the series, Carry on Columbus, released in on the th anniversary of the European discovery of the Americas, died at the box office. The innocent naughtiness had been replaced by a cruder humour.

Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle and other "alternative" comedians were now the mainstays, to ill effect, and Barbara Windsor refused to appear in the film after reading the script; she knew her audience. Nevertheless, half a century on, the Carry Ons have become a part of British film history, like Hitchcock and Hammer horror.

It was this philosophy that ensured that no cast member ever had their name above the title, and given that the films were churned out in as little as six weeks production time it was relatively common for one or more of the 'regulars' to miss an appearance. Webber's book is strong on detailing the development of the relationship between the producers and the writers, and in noting the degree with which the smuttiness of the series increased when Talbot Rothwell replaced Norman Hudis as principal script-writer.

Surprisingly, Webber does not succeed in evoking very much of the humour which one assumes would be part and parcel of the Carry On history. Occasionally, a nugget appears, such as the story about the camel hired from Chessington Zoo for Carry On Follow That Camel, which turned out to be frightened of sand.

There is something distinctly, peculiarly, English about the Carry On films, and it is interesting to go through a roll call of just how many household names appeared in one or other of the films.

Along the way the cast list included people such as Wilfred Hyde-White - famous for having a daffodil substituted for a rectal thermometer in Carry On Nurse Webber's dry treatment would have benefited immensely from some stills from the films, rather than the dull selection of on-set photographs included. He does usefully provide a cast list for all of the 31 feature films, culminating in the offering Carry On Columbus.
