The first, as a full-page irontispiece, represents Aesop, within a. The 2nd leaf is surrounded by the so-called stork-border, consisting of interlacing foliage with 15 different figures of birds.
The life of Aesop is illustrated by 26 cuts. All these Fables are richly illustrated by the famous cuts, afterwards used by Ger.
Leeu at Ant- werp. The designs are admirable for force of expression and of feature, the accessories are very interesting and full of character. The story is always told in the most direct and the clearest manner. The cuts are the work of an admirable artist. There are also very nice woodcut initials of handsome desi gn, representing florals and lion's head. Six of them show 'Occupations of he Months', originally used in a German Calender, they represent a shepherd, feasting, trimming vines, playing the lute, reaping, killing swine, see reproductions in Jennings, Early Woodcut Initials, p.

Haebler does not mention these types, the measurement of which is — mm. Proctor, Additions A. Pellechet , Rahir, Bibl. Magnificent piece of printing of the utmost rarity, adorned with 12 very curious full-page woodcuts. It is only Mile. Pellechet who describes exact- ly this very interesting edition of the famous work Bibl. Nationale at Paris , but without mentioning the incorrect description by Hain. Proctor supposes the edition to have been printed at Lyons about , but he does not mention the description by Hain. The printer worked at Lyons about The woodcuts are of the highest interest. Each cut is signed by an un- known master ID Nagler, Monogrammisten Weiterhin folgende Ar- beiten: The subject of the cuts is the same as that in the xylographic editions.
But the design is more lively and more exact, and the figures are partly full of character. The style of the artist proves typical French influence. We give a short description of these interesting cuts which are described here for the first time: A sick man in bed; around it four devils, three hol- ding scrolls in their hands.
At the head of the bed are God the Father, on his right Christ and the Virgin. Around the bed of the dying man are six devils, five with scrolls, accusing him of various sins; between the devils are sitting or lying several figures. On the top of the dying man is a cock, in background St. Peter and Mary Magdalene, on the right the dying penitent thief on the cross. In the foreground stands an angel and St. Paul on his fallen horse. Under the bed are two devils represented as dogs. On verso of 1. The dying man is showing his impatience under his sufferings by kicking one of three persons mini- stering to him.
On the left a devil. On verso of A': Stephan, before the bed is standing an angel, on the left two devils are flying into hell. On verso of A": In the background are God the Father, Christ, the Virgin and two saints, the bed is surrounded by five devils offering crowns to the dying man. In background the Holy Trinity, St. The bed is surrounded by three angels. On the left of the foreground is hell wherein are three men.
In foreground there is a large building, in the cellar of which ar seen four wine-casks, on the left a man is leading a horse into a stable. The bed with the dying man is surrounded by an angel, a holy woman standing on the top of it, and several relations, the dying man is looking on the Crucifix. The dying man is surrounded on one side by the Crucifix, saints and angels, and on other side by several devils with scrolls. He holds in his right hand the sacred taper, supported by an officiating monk.
The last woodcut, on verso of the last leaf, shows in large letters with scrolls on blackground the title: Ars i mori I endi. The author of this important work was the cardinal Capranica, bishop of Fermo, living from to See Falk, Die deutschen Sterbebiichlein.
Very fine and clean copy with some old marginal notes. The wood- cuts, here printed for the first time, are in very fresh state. The work is an extensive explanation of the Christian dogmas, divided into 21 articles. The author is perhaps Raymund Lullo. Large and clean copy, some marginal notes, a few small wormholes at end. Three copies in U. Strassburg , jo- hann Mentelin, not after Gothic letter, 39 lines, 20 of 21 unn.
Very early product from the first press of Strassburg. Proctor and other biblio- graphers have treated Mentelin as the unscrupulous plagiarist, but this decision appears to be against the weight of evidence. In the Mainz edition Fust's name is substituted for Mentelin's, and the words "atque tandem etiam in Argentina" cease tho have any appropriateness.
Another reason for the Strass- burg edition being the earlier is that, as explained at the end of the preface, the index references require to be completed by hand, whereas Fust made his complete in print, a point which Schoeffer emphasizes in his advertisement. In the British Museum copy the rubricator has added the date 14f 6.
In our copy the last leaf of the register is in good facsimile, the last blank is wanting. Otherwise it is a well preserved, large copy, slightly waterstained in margins. The Munich copy has the rubricator's date " virgil Pentec". This is the fourth tract in that volume. Large copy, but rather wormed, chiefly in blank margins, the first and the last leaf slightly stained.
