Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase. I couldn't wait for this book to be released, and I have to say it definitely over delivered. In some of the other books the vamps quickly accept the mating even after centuries of solitude. Tane's reluctance came off more believable. Ivy delivers very compelling characters with individual voices and unique journeys. I think the author is making an effort to make the internal dialogue more snappy with the more pop culture references which was an amusing touch in addition to Levet continuing to be a thorn in the vamp's collective sides.

Usually in romances I skip the chapters which deal only with the internal strife on the side of the bad guys. I skip whole chapters in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Well, we still can't really tell by the end of Book 7. There were a lot of characters to keep track of in this one between the new vamps, new bad guys, new types of demons, old vamps who are reintroduced if you're a fan of the series, you'll want to make sure to read Ms.

Of course I devoured this book ok the pun was intended in one day, so maybe it was just me. I purchased the Kindle version a bargain by the way! A lot of the dialogue came in continuous streams vs. So that was a little distracting, but was a fault of the format not the plot or the author. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Self-imposed isolationist Charon, Tane, hunts the half-Jinn, Laylah, with orders to bring her to the Commission and the vampire king, Styx. Well, Laylah does not want to be caught. And so the novel reveals itself with super-alpha vampire Tane chasing after a stubborn half-Jinn and running into a number of not-so-nice demons after Laylah themselves.

As I have come to expect from Alexandra Ivy, the dialogue fits the characters and entertains me. The novel is filled with characters purely out of Ms. Ivy's amazing imagination -- some delightful and some malevolent. The novel can be a stand alone but I am glad I began the series at book one so I can enjoy the ongoing interaction between characters from previous books keeping up the continuity of this scary and complex paranormal world. Brooding alpha males and tough alpha females butting heads and fighting against the obvious HEA about to happen.

What fun to read. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. Tane is the sexy and dangerous Charon we met in the last book, and now he's on the trail of a forbidden mongrel. Now she has a new problem with an irresistible vampire that is duty bound to hand her over to the ruling powers of the demon world. What neither one of them expects is the undeniable attraction that they can't seem to fight. Laylah's character is heartbreaking. She has always had to hide her existence for the mere fact of her parentage. Since Jinn mongrels are normally destroyed, she never trusts anyone and keeps herself isolated.

She also has a secret she will do anything to protect. Tane is so sexy and fierce. No one is quite sure what or when but it's going to be deadly and it's going to be soon. We learn that the baby does play a role but not much else. A lot of the book was spent on Tane and Laylah so I wished more would have been revealed.

Devoured By Darkness has the same feel as the other books in the series with appearances from characters fans love and I think those who are already invested in the series will enjoy this one. Though Laylah and Tane's relationship felt more physical than anything else, it worked for them. My favorite and the bane of all male vampires, Levet, is back and is as charming as ever. The small gargoyle steals every scene. New characters are introduced and the way this book ends has you wanting to know what happens next.

Feb 13, Melindeeloo rated it really liked it Shelves: Trying to lead a pursuer away from her precious secret, Layla finally turns to face the 'leech' who has been on her tail for days. Tasked with capturing the woman who is an abomination due to her forbidden half-jinn heritage, vampire enforcer Tane inexplicably finds himself unable to carry out his duty to turn Layla over for execution.

Instead Tane will 'make a wish' and place himself in Layla's power in order to protect her while she fulfills a destiny which affects the fate of the entire world Trying to lead a pursuer away from her precious secret, Layla finally turns to face the 'leech' who has been on her tail for days. Instead Tane will 'make a wish' and place himself in Layla's power in order to protect her while she fulfills a destiny which affects the fate of the entire world.

I am quite hero-centric and I really like Ivy's heroes. Tane is dark, solitary, and deadly, and has 'something' in his past but, like Ivy's other heroes, he isn't handicapped by it -I figure immortals should be able to get over it or get therapy. I also liked how Tane spends a fair amount of time in denial about how important Layla truly is to him, even though he never denies his physical attraction to her. The only thing about Tane that worked less well for me was Ivy's physical description of Tane, the shoulder length Mohawk just didn't do it for me and what self-respecting vampire — and one who is a feared hunter of his own kind at that — has a wardrobe that consists solely of khaki shorts.

I also liked Layla too, she has the prerequisite stubbornness necessary to hold her own against an immortal alpha male, and yet is still vulnerable due to the funkiness of her powers and the isolation that her djinn blood has forced on her. In addition to the Tane and Layla's story, Devoured by Darkness offers a few little peeks at Caine and Cassandra who met at the end of the last book. I wonder if they will eventually get their own story or if they will continue as just a side thread in coming books, either way I hope to see more of them and it is clear that Cassandra is going to make Caine earn his redemption.

Also fun, the pair from Ivy's short Yours for Eternity get a small cameo here and their story turn out to be relevant to Layla's. But the best of all, Ivy give an intriguing intro to the next starring pair — who will put another twist in her formula — and that pair has me eagerly anticipating the next book, Bound by Darkness.

Mar 06, Tina rated it really liked it Shelves: I really enjoy this series by Alexandra Ivy and although she does a great job in maintaining the magic created from the first book this one is not my favorite. The story picks up right from where the last one left off. This was a little difficult for me because much time has passed since I read the last book.

I had to refer to the previous book to remind myself about a previous character-Caine.

Devoured by Darkness (Guardians of Eternity, #7) by Alexandra Ivy

What happened to him in the previo I really enjoy this series by Alexandra Ivy and although she does a great job in maintaining the magic created from the first book this one is not my favorite. What happened to him in the previous book plays somewhat a role in this book. The hero Tane did not like the heroine Laylah because of her heritage.

I like how the author developed this part of the relationship. He is also unique in that his Polynesian heritage has him sporting a shaved head with a Mohawk and comfortable with not wearing shoes umm yeah-that lost him some hottie points. Laylah is a unique character in that she is part Jinn. She is considered to be a mongrel because she is half Jinn and half human. This causes her to have no control over her powers. By law she should be executed therefore she has been in hiding.

She is unwittingly tasked with hiding an important secret. The story is about the journey Laylah and Tane takes to keep this secret. There is a side story about Caine who was a Cur-low on the were scale and now a pure blooded Cur and Cassie who is a prophet which personally I could have done without. It seems as this part was just thrown into the story. It really served no purpose and frankly I really hope the author does not make a book for Caine and Cassie. Of course the all loving mini gargoyle Levet shows up in this story. How can he not?

I give this one a rating of 3. May 28, IamGamz rated it really liked it Shelves: Tane is back and he has the task of protecting Laylah, a half Jinn, half human mongrel that everyone is looking for. Another fab read, even though the characters are a bit cookie cutterish, the books are still engaging. The storyline is also getting better and better with each book. Not only did we get an amazing story with Tane and Laylah, but it set us up wonderfully for the next book and I think another future book with Caine and Cassandra???? Anyway, I loved Tane's cockiness and how Laylah just melted away his heart without him even realizing it! The sexual energy between these two started from the fist moment they spoke to each other and you just knew that it would be "electric" when they finally consumated their attraction Jun 07, Janice Barnard rated it liked it.

Tane decides that he needs to know what exactly she is hiding before he can turn her over to the Commission. He wants to know what is so important that she would risk her own life for, just to prevent him from discovering it. Laylah has been chased her entire life because of decisions that she was never a part of.

The only thing she wants in life is to live. The Commission decided at some point that Jinn and Jinn half breeds must be executed, they are too unstable. Laylah has never even met the parents that birthed her into this death sentence of a life.

She has a strong will to live. She has to survive now to in order to continue protecting a child that she was entrusted with decades before. Many shocking revelations are made in this book: This is a very exciting read that is nearly impossible to put down. The romance between Tane and Laylah is incredible. They have a few hurdles to get through, but that just keeps the book even more interesting.

Due to the past events in their lives they have some trust issues. I think this is the best book in the series thus far.

I loved the main characters. I enjoyed the roles that the characters from the past books played. I also enjoyed meeting the characters to the next books. This is a series that must be read in order. Each book picks up where the previous one left off. There is very little to no rehashing.

The readers are given some information on what became of Cassandra and Caine. I enjoy reading riddle speaking prophets who typically cause more confusion than give answers. I hope Cassandra gets a book. She is going to be so fun to read. As is she is running Caine through the paces. She takes everything so literally. The readers are also introduced to the couple in the Supernatural anthology August Uriel and Kata and also the couple in the next book Bound by Darkness November Ariyal and Jaelyn. Vampire hunter Tane thinks hunting half-breeds is a waste of a self-respecting Charon's skills but the Commission's policy is clear.

Overall, this reader thought the bland installment was paranormal light, supernatural beings without all that spicy, pesky otherworldliness. Mar 24, Kristi Hudecek-Ashwill rated it it was amazing. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I thought this book was awesome but at the same time it was a little disconcerting with the baby factor. Yeah, I'm going throw in a spoiler here. A mix between a Jinn and something else and Tane is not only a vampire but a Charon, a vampire assassin.

He's known for being ruthless and never takes any mercy on anybody. He's just one bad-ass vampire and Laylah is really sweet and she has a very kind nature about her but the weird thing is she's been hauling around this baby that i I thought this book was awesome but at the same time it was a little disconcerting with the baby factor. He's just one bad-ass vampire and Laylah is really sweet and she has a very kind nature about her but the weird thing is she's been hauling around this baby that is inanimate, more like a doll, for the last 50 years.

Sorry but that just creeped me out. I equated it with something Alice Cooper sang about back in the 70s. Anyway, Tane gets this and he helps her take care of this baby that really doesn't need anything to survive other than to be hidden and moved from place to place. It's supposed to the spawn of the Dark Lord and everybody wants to kill it except for Laylah who believes the baby is innocent so she's protecting it and then Tane is so in love with Laylah that he's protecting it, too. That was the basis of the story. But the end was really creepy because the baby was a Gemini, meaning twins, and the other baby was a girl and Laylah had felt no attachment to that child.

She didn't even know it was there so it went down with Sergei in the portal and nobody really seemed to care. I guess either rescuing her or chasing her down for being evil is for another novel. This baby and that wimpy whiny Sergei who really is a bastard. I was glad when Marika was killed. She was wicked mean and death was too easy for her.

Now, Laylah's mom is somewhere and the baby girl is somewhere and yeah, I hope it's covered in another novel. And let's not forget Caine and Cassandra and Ariyal and Jaelyn. The latter two went down the portal, too. Oh and I still love Styx the best. It's not that I dislike Viper but man, that guy is vain. So is Salvatore but he's got a real good sense of humor about him and he had me laughing a lot. Anyway, just my two cents Mar 08, Danielle rated it really liked it Shelves: I'm so happy I saved this book until now.

This story really brightened up my Christmas. I did not think I would enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed Salvatore and Harley's story but surprisingly I did. I felt that he was somewhat a trumped up Raven. I was completely wrong. The Charon was in effect the executioner of the Anasso but his main duty wa I'm so happy I saved this book until now. The Charon was in effect the executioner of the Anasso but his main duty was take out vampires who had lost control or gone insane, which many did after becoming addicted to tainted blood.

Tane's past made him the perfect vampire for the job as Charon, but that did not mean that he was happy with being ostracized because of his position. This book explores Tane's meeting and interaction with another ostracized demon, Laylah, a half-breed Jinn. Tane is duty bound to find Laylah and turn her into the Commission because half-breed Jinns were outlawed and deemed unstable. However, Tane finds himself inexplicably drawn to her and unable to turn her over to the Commission to be killed.

While trying to unearth her secrets and protect her from the numerous demons who are now dogging her steps, Tane tries to hide her from the Commission. At this point every avid reader of the Guardians of Eternity series is conflicted because they do not want this lovely heroine to be turned in to Commission to be executed BUT they also do not want to see Tane suffer as Cesar had suffered for disobeying the Commission. I'm not going to say what choices are made but it was definitely worth the read. I know this is going to sound cliche but I can't help it -- Can these two characters love for one another survive the insurmountable odds againnst them?

This book was really great. It added more mystery to the Guardians of Eternity series and more intrigue. Ivy also gave us a glimpse at more intriguing characters, who will most definitely be the focus of futire books. What can Alexandra Ivy write about next? It just keeps getting better and better. Mar 22, Shari Kay rated it it was ok Shelves: I didn't like this one at all. I pretty much hated the heroine. Layla did not garner my sympathy. She was mostly a biotch through the entire book. Yes, I know this is a reoccurring theme in GofE She was going to leave Tane in the Mist He had to beg the bullying Commission, which I'm seriously beginning to hate btw, and got punished for helping her and more emasculated than the usual AI hero because of it.

As per reoccurring plot device, she did TSTL actions which others had to get her out of, then tried to argue that she was able to take care of herself; which she did not ONCE prove in her entire life. I was bothered more than usual by the pop culture references. I mean, it's suppose to be an action scene, dire consequences and all that Last, but certainly not least in a romance, I want to feel some spark between the MC's. I felt nada between these two.

The "I love you" came out of the blue, at least on Layla's part, but I never felt anything but the lust for Tane from her, until the very end. Certainly not when she professed it. And speaking of Tane I didn't find much sexy about a long Mohawk and khaki shorts. Each to their own, I guess. Anyways, this was absolutely my least favorite installment of this series. Will I continue it?

I've enjoyed this series for the most part and am willing to give this author a whiff on this one.
