An excellent presentation of a truly brave man who rose above the evil of those around him. His refreshing pragmatism brought changes in a corrupt system in which change seemed impossible.

I believe credit should go to his God-fearing praying mother. Gorbachev himself at one time said he was an atheist, but I think he may be reconsidering his belief. Perhaps by now he is a true believer, after searching for the facts about Jesus. May be the next book will include an update on his faith. Anyway I highly recommend this book.

Could be the most worthless book on a major historical figure I've read to date. What a waste of paper. Wikipedia has more information about Gorbachev than this book which should be more honestly called a leaflet because of its meager size. Buy works from Robert Service or Vladislav Zubok instead and you'll get a better understanding of Gorbachev. Being from a Soviet background I remember these times vividly and have to say that in reading this book many memories were brought to mind.

I found I was recalling these events and found this a very accurate and absorbing read.

The reference to the "shared sense of humor" between the two leaders General Secretary Gorbachev and U. S President Reagan did allow me a smile but I will not give that story away here. It was enlightening and I would recommend it for its conciseness and accuracy. Though this isn't my usual kind of read, I was really impressed how the authors dealt with this difficult subject. We read so much based on personal opinions and theories, but here you will find a book that is straight to the point and doesn't deviate from the importance of this world changing event.

Anyone with an interest in the subject will find this a fascinating and historically correct read. Impressive work, well written. Drawing on interviews with Gorbachev himself, transcripts and documents from the Russian archives, and interviews with Kremlin aides and adversaries, as well as foreign leaders, Taubman's intensely personal portrait extends to Gorbachev's remarkable marriage to a woman he deeply loved, and to the family that they raised together.

Nuanced and poignant, yet unsparing and honest, this sweeping account has all the amplitude of a great Russian novel. By the end of his tenure six years later, the Communist system was dismantled, the cold war was over and, on 25th December , the Soviet Union itself ceased to exist.

I had to do a paper on a world leader for a Master's course and as I pondered the idea of whom I would choose, my mind went back to high school when Reagan uttered those famous words of " Taubman is undoubtedly an expert in the rise and fall of the USSR and this book on Mikhail Gorbachev was enlightening and even entertaining.

    Gorbachev was a fascinating man who rose from the poorest of the poor to the top of the Soviet power ladder in spite of having views contrary to most of his peers. This book gave a detailed account of his life with supporting documentation and provided me with a plethora of information from which to do a research paper.
