The man leaves something to each of the children: Attached to the will by a rusty pin is a note scrawled in a shaky hand, "For Saffron. Her angel in the garden. As McKay shapes an intriguing plot around Saffy's angel, the Cassons' capricious capers and understated, droll dialogue will keep readers chuckling. Especially entertaining subplots include: An unlikely friendship with Sarah "the wheelchair girl" , a neighbor, brings out another side of Saffy as the two attempt to find her angel in Siena, and Saffy makes all kinds of discoveries, including her love for the Cassons.

The author blends a generous heaping of humor and joy with a dose of pain in a memorable portrait of a vastly human family. The only disappointment for readers may be that McKay's affecting conclusion arrives too soon. They'll close this book hoping for the Casson clan's swift return. View Full Version of PW. Saffy's Angel by Hilary McKay - review

So when her grandfather bequests a stone angel to her, Saffy knows she has to find it. Realising that her childhood in Siena holds the key, she stows away on a car trip to Italy. The rest of the family are engaged in their own wacky projects: Caddy, a hopeless student, is revising for her A levels and desperately trying to pass her driving test. Indigo, the only boy in the Casson family, is determined to rid himself of his fear of heights.

And the youngest, Rose, a budding artist, has a knack for baiting her pompous dad, with entertaining results. Saffy's Angel won the Whitbread Children's Book Award, and book 3, Permanent Rose , was shortlisted for the same award, celebrating McKay's talent for conveying the anarchic bedlam of family life.

It's highly unusual to find a series of books that is well-written brilliantly written, in fact , warm, funny, and believable AND that just keeps getting better. It's also unusual to find books that make you laugh and cry, without ever veering into sentimentality. The writing throughout is brilliant -- and she has a way that I can't quite figure out of sometimes building up to a big scene, then skipping over it and letting what happened emerge in dialog which only intensifies the emotional effect.

I don't want to say anything about what happens, because suspense is part of the fun, too. I don't understand why these books aren't famous! I only found out about them because a friend did the new covers and posted about McKay's brilliance on Facebook. I am recommending them to everyone I know. My only regret is that the copies I got had the old covers stock photos of girls -- apparently the new ones won't be sold until the old ones sell out.

One person found this helpful. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Kinda dark and sad and uugh I read lots of children's books in search of good reads for my grands. This didn't make the cut. It was recommended as similar to the Melindys, the VanderBeekers, the Peppers, and All-of-a-kind family. I beg to differ. I love the Casson Family books. No one in them is perfect, but there is no character I did not end up liking.

They deal with some tough family issues - adoption, marital difficulties, physical disabilities - while managing to be completely hilarious. Nothing is glossed over, yet nothing is too scary for young kids.

All ages can enjoy these four children, whose artist parents have named them all after colors: Saffron, the only one of the four whose name is not on the artists' color chart on the kitchen wall, embarks on a quest for the real source of her name. Will she find it?
