Stars in the early and late phases of their evolution are shrouded by huge dusty envelopes in the form of dust and gas outflows. Knowing details of these clouds is important because the clouds can produce stars and also provide material for the growth of black holes. Unlike in the optical, X-ray and infrared wavelengths, it is unusual to see a dark feature with radio waves.

Radio is a long wavelength and therefore doesn't get absorbed easily and typically passes through whatever is in its way. Zadeh will present his results at a. He also will participate in a press conference on the galactic center at p.

PST the same day. The interaction of a cold dust cloud with a hot radiation field results in a loss in the continuum emission and appears as a dark feature in the radio wavelength image, Zadeh said. The dark features that trace the embedded molecular clouds provide astronomers with the size of the cloud in three dimensions.

The cloud now is too close to the black hole for Zadeh to take an image, but he is looking at earlier data to see if he can locate G2 as a radio dark cloud. Interplanetary dust cloud - Wikipedia

Story Source: Materials provided by Northwestern University. This is the first time that scientists have obtained the spectra of planets outside the solar system — a major step towards the ultimate goal of learning more about Earth-like planets in the future.

Scientists were expecting to see signs of water on the planets because computer models show that they formed with water at greater distances from their host stars before migrating inwards to their present locations. However, independent observations of both planets did not find water or other expected molecules, such as methane or carbon dioxide. But scientists say these two possibilities are unlikely.

Dust cloud

On such a planet, it could actually be raining dust. Other scientists are not convinced that the clouds are made of silicates, however.

They could not identify this with any known material, but they say they cannot not rule out that it is carbon-based — which would be interesting, as carbon is a major building block of life. They hope to clarify the source of this emission with future Spitzer observations.

Watch a video of such so-called transiting planets. There was actually less sodium in the atmosphere than expected, suggesting high clouds were obscuring the sodium from view, Swain told New Scientist. Now they have done a much more far-reaching observation with Spitzer.
