This was a story which held a great interest for me The book was not the most delightful of reads but it seems that most of the known facts were there. There is not really a lot written about this case and so this book is quite useful albeit not grippingly written. Oct 31, Pamela rated it it was amazing. A thorough and entertaining examination of a famously, infamous murder in Wartime Nassau. It is meticulously researched, yet still manages to thrill.

I found myself transported to another time and place - one where solicitors wore white wigs and women were required to wear hats whilst in the courtroom. I highly recommend this intelligently written, yet enjoyable, book.

Opprobrium and boulevardier are 2 that I noted. I also learned about a disease I'd never heard of before - trench mouth, which sounded really awful - and a term I'd never heard before grass widow. In that respect, I found this book very informative. I found the book well-written; I think James Owen managed to tell the story in such a way as to keep the reader fully engaged.

Editorial Reviews

I found myself seeing the story unfolding in Canada as Sir Harry struck it rich and in Nassau. I enjoyed the buildup though the back stories as the author laid out each character's tale and their interactions. I felt the tension in the courtroom as each witness testified and as each piece of evidence was presented.

A Serpent in Eden

I enjoyed the little skirmishes between the lawyers and the theatrics as each vied to break witnesses down. Overall, I enjoyed the book but I wasn't convinced in the end of the conclusion that the author came to. I felt that he was building up throughout the book to something coming out of left field that would be surprising. I didn't feel like that was delivered. I found the end a bit of a letdown.

James Owen has re-examined the evidence and produced a fascinating account of the murky lives of the idle rich.
