The Curse of the Good Girl: Raising Authentic Girls with Courage and Confidence

Aug 21, Deanna rated it did not like it. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review Lop or Lovers of Paranormal. The cover of this book is, in my opinion, the best thing about it. It would be an understatement to say that I was disappointed by the poor grammar, run on or disjointed sentences, thin plot construction and poor character development.

It would appear that the author decided on a whim to spend a weekend writing a novel, so he sat down and hammered it out on word in a couple of days and published it immediately without the benefit of any editing whatsoever.

And yet somehow, people who have not had any contact with the supernatural in the past readily accept that so-and-so is a witch, as if they were describing their eye color or expressing a talent for baking. Also in that vein, there is a scene where a character named Ambrosia tells two of the witches that she's always known what they were because she could sense it. It is disussed how only a witch can sense a witch, but apparently, the two girls in question, in spite of being very powerful witches, had absolutely no idea up to that point that Ambrosia was one as well.

Apparently the witch sensing talent only applies to SOME of them. A film of a naked girl is shown in a school-wide assembly and the result is the expulsion of a single student. The humiliated girl's parents don't even call authorities, in fact there is no communication whatsoever between the school and the parents. This leads me to believe that the author lacks the maturity to understand how adults think. Perhaps some research would have been in order.

In addition, the girls who are witches, and claim that they are so kind and soft-hearted, change their tunes pretty quickly when they attempt to kill Amanda and Gillian, the girls who initiated the aforementioned humiliation. The two girls approach the witches hoping a spell that was cast in retaliation can be removed.

And a supposedly-wouldn't-hurt-a-fly witch demands that the price for the spell being removed is that Amanda kill her friend Gillian. And again, the adults, who are supposedly GOOD witches, are all perfectly ok with this solution. Then there is the matter of Amanda's best friend Kris, whose true-to-the-death friendship apparently hinges upon Amanda's appearance and whether or not Amanda will finally have sex with her boyfriend. I can honestly say I don't know a single teenaged girl who would consider someone who only wants to be friends because they want to hang out with someone pretty, to be a "best friend".

That's not even taking into account the pressures from said "best friend" to do something Amanda claims she is not emotionally ready for. When Amanda is rescued from an attempted gang rape, she stands up and brushes herself off, and yells at her friend for being asleep in the car while the whole episode was going on. After a woman has been brutally forced to the ground in an attempted gang rape, she is not likely to give up THAT VERY NIGHT, the virginity that she has been carefully safeguarding, no matter how much she loves the guy she's giving it to.

She is going to feel dirty, abused and unattractive, and the thought of anyone touching her in a sexual way may very likely cause her emotional pain for a while. A little research on the aftereffects of attempted rape, and on how girls and adults think would have gone a long way to improve this novel. Well, that and a decent editor. Bestselling author of Odd Girl Out , Rachel Simmons exposes the myth of the Good Girl, freeing girls from its impossible standards and encouraging them to embrace their real selves In The Curse of the Good Girl , bestselling author Rachel Simmons argues that in lionizing the Good Girl we are teaching girls to embrace a version of selfhood that sharply curtails their power and potential.

The Curse of Blackwater [1] - SCARY LITTLE GIRL

Unerringly nice, polite, modest, and selfless, the Good Girl is a paradigm so narrowly defined that it's unachievable. When girls inevitably fail to live up-experiencing conflicts with peers, making mistakes in the classroom or on the playing field-they are paralyzed by self-criticism, stunting the growth of vital skills and habits. Simmons traces the poisonous impact of Good Girl pressure on development and provides a strategy to reverse the tide. At once expository and prescriptive, The Curse of the Good Girl is a call to arms from a new front in female empowerment.

Looking to the stories shared by the women and girls who attend her workshops, Simmons shows that Good Girl pressure from parents, teachers, coaches, media, and peers erects a psychological glass ceiling that begins to enforce its confines in girlhood and extends across the female lifespan. The curse of the Good Girl erodes girls' ability to know, express, and manage a complete range of feelings. It expects girls to be selfless, limiting the expression of their needs.

It requires modesty, depriving the permission to articulate their strengths and goals. It diminishes assertive body language, quieting voices and weakening handshakes. It touches all areas of girls' lives and follows many into adulthood, limiting their personal and professional potential.

  • CHANGING SEASONS by Jack Weston.

Since the popularization of the Ophelia phenomenon, we have lamented the loss of self-esteem in adolescent girls, recognizing that while the doors of opportunity are open to twenty-first-century American girls, many lack the confidence to walk through them. In The Curse of the Good Girl , Simmons provides a catalog of tangible lessons in bolstering the self and silencing the curse of the Good Girl.

At the core of Simmons's radical argument is her belief that the most critical freedom we can win for our daughters is the liberty not only to listen to their inner voice but also to act on it. Read more Read less. Kindle Cloud Reader Read instantly in your browser.

Really interesting and thought provoking points made in this book. I checked it out from the library first, then had to buy it.

One person found this helpful. I've read similar books before. It talks about an important topic, so the main thing bothered me was that it was overly simplistic.
