Or is the chef's cooking to blame? As ever the case is never simple for this policing pair, especially with a home office official as a suspect and a budget-obsessed superintendent breathing down their necks. And I thought, Oh boy! Another academic-type mystery to add to my collected readings!

We can say that, but I'm not so very excited about it. The mystery was fairly pedestrian. I didn't care for the protagonists. The interactions between Rafferty and Llewellyn just didn't work. Llewellyn is billed as "erudite"--a college man. But he comes off pretty much as a prig. I got a bit tired of him looking down his nose at Rafferty's fondness for pubs and a bit of bitter. And I'm not a drinking woman myself--but for heaven's sake can we not let the man have his pint?

And the friction between Rafferty and his penny-pinching superior didn't really come off either. I just don't think Evans has a real way with characterization. The prose is fine--flows very nicely. But it would have helped if that nice prose had been about characters and a story that I really cared about. One and a half stars. A year class reunion of the class of graduates from the prestigious Griffin School culminates in the death of a high profile former student, DI Joseph Rafferty and his partner, Sergeant Dafyd Llewellyn, are called in to unearth the truth. The man was poisoned with hemlock from local plants. Was it suicide, or was he murdered?

Deadly Reunion

DI Joseph Rafferty and Sergeant Dafyd Llewellyn have a new case that takes them to prestigious Griffin School, where an alumnus has been found dead at a class reunion. The victim is a well-known athlete, and his classmates, all suspects, include a Home Office official. As the detectives work to solve the crime, they must deal with their budget-obsessed superintendent and with Rafferty's mother, who is planning a big family reunion.

This well-constructed procedural effectively blends humorous details of Rafferty's family life into an engaging case in a solid series appealing to both procedural and cozy fans. Adam Ainsley had been quite the big man on campus at his prestigious private school. So it should be a rare treat that he shows up at the Griffin School's annual reunion.

Only somebody treats him to a dose of hemlock, and DI Joe Rafferty has the perfect excuse to escape Cyrus, Wendy, Angel and Louis, the distant American cousins his ma has quartered with him and his new wife Abra as part of an international gathering of the Rafferty clan. To his partner DS Dafyd Llewellyn's dismay, Rafferty runs up travel expenses galore, driving to Suffolk to interview the deceased's parents and to Somerset to speak to his ex-wives.

His only regret is that Gary Sadiq is in London, too, saving his boss, Supt. Bradley, from paying for a trip to Sadiq's native India. In Cambridge, fellow alum Victoria Watson has little enough to say, but a visit to Alice Douglas in Norwich turns up an unexpected daughter who's just the right age to have been the legacy of one of the many conquests of Adam's school days. As the mileage accumulates, Rafferty seems to be making no headway in figuring out who took Ainsley out of the scrum. And by leaving Abra alone with voluble Cyrus, Joe risks a second reunion-centered murder a lot closer to home.

Readers are liable to find themselves on the side of Rafferty's despised super: It just takes him too darn long to solve this one. Evans has had a variety of jobs and spent several years helping to run a vehicle-repair workshop. There she tackled tax returns, the intricacies of which she believes were an excellent apprenticeship for the brain-teasing work necessary in writing a whodunnit.

In some cases, as with Chronicles of Narnia , disagreements about order necessitate the creation of more than one series. If the series has an order, add a number or other descriptor in parenthesis after the series title eg.

Series by cover

By default, it sorts by the number, or alphabetically if there is no number. If you want to force a particular order, use the character to divide the number and the descriptor. So, " 0 prequel " sorts by 0 under the label "prequel. Series was designed to cover groups of books generally understood as such see Wikipedia: Like many concepts in the book world, "series" is a somewhat fluid and contested notion.

Deadly Reunion by Geraldine Evans

A good rule of thumb is that series have a conventional name and are intentional creations , on the part of the author or publisher. For now, avoid forcing the issue with mere "lists" of works possessing an arbitrary shared characteristic, such as relating to a particular place. Avoid series that cross authors, unless the authors were or became aware of the series identification eg. Also avoid publisher series, unless the publisher has a true monopoly over the "works" in question.
