And that trend is only going to continue — if the wilderness and wild animals are protected. Despite the challenges in Africa, we have something very, very special to show the world. And it must be protected at all costs. What would Africa be without large herds of wild elephants? This, actually, is a very real possibility.

There are only odd elephants left in Africa, down from several million a years ago. It was compiled and edited by the brilliant Don Pinnock and Colin Bell. It is a human crisis. Our greatest challenge is to combat not only human criminality but the enemies within ourselves. It is time to take a long, hard look at ourselves. Don and Colin have plans to distribute it to key members at the upcoming CITES conference in Sri Lanka…and are looking to distribute it to key politicians and business people in Asia.

And make sure they read it! And, whoever you are, where ever you are, please stand up and speak up for elephants and African wilderness. During my many years alone in the forests of Africa, I felt very close to a great spiritual power. It seemed to be all around. I came to believe that there is a spark of that spiritual power in all living things. With our highly developed intellect and our unique ability to communicate using a sophisticated spoken language, we humans are able to question the meaning of our lives on Earth. I came to believe that the spark of the Great Spirit that I sens It's always an incredible feeling when a wild animal makes eye contact with me.

Especially an animal with an obvious sentience and soul like a gorilla, chimpanzee, elephant or dolphin. Maybe they're asking us a question: why have we destroyed so much of this little, miraculous planet? Our fellow species on Earth are going extinct at a rate 1 to 10 times faster than the natural rate, because of human impacts.

This is real. And we humans are all collectively responsible. Can we step off our shaky, self-important pedestal and live in balance with other creatures? Not tomorrow, but now? Do wild places and animals not have a right to exist independently of our needs? The last remaining wild places and their animals are sacrosanct. It's up to us to look after and nurture - and expand - whatever remains of the wilderness.

This is the most important cause of our times, in my humble opinion. What question do you think this young gorilla is asking you? And how would you answer?

Odzala Discovery Camps. I think this word is used too often. The small island of Principe in the Atlantic Ocean is kms west of Gabon, and measures 30kms long and 6kms wide. Today there are about 7 people living on the island mostly descendants of slaves from central Africa , but up until about , the island was uninhabited.

It was in this quality of environment in which our human ancestors probably evolved. This small island represents an environment which should be the norm, but is now the exception to the rule. And we - as humans - are responsible. So, what do we do about it? For all the moms. And mine. And for Mother Earth too. This past week, an expert team of conservationists successfully moved six black rhinos 8 kms from South Africa to Chad. Plus some big trucks with cranes, a police escort and a huge Antonov plane. The black rhin This species was once widespread across most of Africa until the s, numbering probably over a million.

Then the poaching onslaught began in the s, as demand for rhino horn soared in Asia. By , their numbers were down to 15 And today, the poaching continues. The last black rhino in Chad was killed by poachers in Since , however, African Parks has managed Zakouma National Park, and has restored this protected area to its former glory, making it one of the most secure protected areas in Africa. But the black rhino was still missing.

These six individuals form the first phase of a larger translocation program, when more black rhinos will be moved to Zakouma. Thank you to African Parks for the opportunity to photograph part of this inspiring story. Wishing you a fantastic week ahead! Mother's Day is just over two weeks away.
