Finally, the whole "New Orleans, Mardi Gras" setting just adds to the overall feel of the book--and I have to be completely honest here and admit I enjoyed "seeing" Donna get back together with Charles. What I didn't like I wonder if it is even necessary to continue mentioning this with regard to Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys mysteries Actually, they are down quite a bit in this story, so maybe just only one of the aforementioned "plot-holes" would have sufficed. Two of three total glaring ones are in regards to Nancy's car. I really don't have that much of a problem with it turning up in New Orleans as Alex and Spike were working out of The Big Easy , but her Dad bringing home a new car "coincidentally" was a bit too much, even for my elementary-school-age mind.

I also do not like the use of racial stereotypes in the characterization of Uncle Rufus. The publishers could have, andshould have, done a lot better with respect to his said characterization. I don't know, either. I also don't buy the story's reasoning Finally I've already stated this is my favorite Nancy Drew story, and, despite the aforementioned problems I have with it, I have to rate it with five stars.

I do hope, seeing as how this book is still in publication, the publisher, if it hasn't already done so, will go back and re-edit out the negative stereotyping. The Haunted Showboat is a great read, otherwise--and this a re-edit would make it even better. Thank you for reading. It was ghost-written by Harriet Stratemeyer Adams.

My book is the original printing of this title. This is a classic Nancy Drew mystery. While I enjoyed re-reading it very much, I think perhaps my tastes have become jaded over the years. Perhaps once I would have given the book 5 stars but after all, this is a simple mystery of the era in which it was written and can't compete with the more complex books written for young adults today. On the other hand, I could not give it less than 4 stars so 4 it is. Nancy and her chums travel by car to My book is the original printing of this title.

Nancy and her chums travel by car to New Orleans to solve the mystery of an old haunted showboat. Along the way there are some thugs with evil plans but the girls always triumph. I just sure wish that my daddy could have afforded to go out and buy me a new convertible if my hypothetical for me old convertible was stolen. Drew tells his savvy daughter, "I was going to buy you a new one for your next birthday anyway. The eternal 18 year-old. Mar 17, the gift rated it it was ok Shelves: I do not have to read any more.

Oct 03, Brianna D rated it really liked it. This book always interests me and I always love when I have the free time during school to read this book. At the end and beginning of every chapter you are either learning some new or you are left with a cliffhanger at the end of the chapter.

I really like this book and recommend you read this book and the rest of the series. The author always makes me want to read more. Everything she puts in has an impact later in the book. He has a great impact on the story. The River Princess was beat down because hardly anyone took care of it anymore. The reason why no one took care of it anymore was because a lot of workers reported to see scary things and events happening. I loved the ending and the ending of all the other books in the series because Nancy and her cousins or friends always solve the mystery.

Carolyn Keene, the author, also puts in the title of the next book so you know which mystery is next. The authors style of writing in this book is very nice and neat. She orders it nice and always leaves a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter. I also apologize if their is spelling errors in this review but that is how the words are spelled in the book He wants the boat in good order in time for a gala celebration--a costume ball to celebrate the engagement of his daughter Donna Mae to Oxford graduate Alex Upgrove.

There are just a few problems So, the girls get all set to head south in Nancy's blue convertible when it gets stolen! But, no worries, Carson Drew comes to the rescue with a brand new yellow convertible because he was planning to get her a new one for her birthday anyway. There's a bomb scare and acid on car bits and a game of hide-and-seek with the culprit all along the way--but they arrive safely in New Orleans and Nancy is ready to get busy solving the mystery.

Except Donna Mae seems determined to prevent any detective work--which makes absolutely no sense when you consider the party planned for the boat is supposed to be for her. Of course, she seems to be very jealous of Nancy and afraid that our detective will run off with her boyfriend. Fortunately, Nancy doesn't let a little interference stand in her way and soon she's taking night-time boat trips to the swamp and learning about pirate treasure.

I'm not entirely sure why this one wasn't a bigger favorite of mine when I was younger. What's not to love about that? And yet--for some reason, this was a "one and done" book for me. I initially read it because it was part of my mom's six-book collection, but as far as I can remember I never picked it up again. Until I found this Cameo Edition to add to my own collection and decided that I needed to give the book another try.

It definitely has a stronger mystery element than many of the stories and makes for quite an exciting adventure. First posted on my blog My Reader's Block. Please request permission before reposting. Mar 03, Brayden rated it it was amazing. Carolyn Keene is one of my favorite authors because she writes about mysteries and I like stuff that involves mysteries. The book "The Haunted Showboat" is a good book because it talks about a bunch of friends that go on this trip and have some weird encounters.

The friends are all starting their trip at home and then their car that they were taking on their trip got stolen. The friends continued their trip by just using another car that somebody had gave them. They were on their way to New Orleans when they saw the car that had got stolen, so the friends decided to chase after it and call the cops. But they lost the car. But then they go to the store and they see the car drive by so they call the cops to have them to a roadblock and catch the suspect, but he got away. And then they come across this farmer that said a man in a black car the one they were looking for asked if he had seen the four friends drive by.

So they go to a store because they know the man is following them and they trick him by going into a store but have one person in the car to chase after him. And they lost him but they got to New Orleans and went to this mysterious place with a boat that they had been told about. They go there and there is a ghost that scared them away.

My favorite part of the book is when they trick the guy and chase him because it was a brilliant idea to do so they would lose them. And my other favorite part is when the friends scare the man by chasing him. But I think you should read this book because it is a very funny, cool book that will make you laugh and it is a really good mystery book.

Hope you read it. Jun 07, Julia rated it really liked it. I had to buy it because I miss living in New Orleans. As I get older, I feel increasingly nostalgic about my childhood. I loved Nancy Drew then and still do today, though some of my mild criticisms of it as an adult were things I found mesmerizing or delightful as a suburban pre-teen. The language is a bit dated, which is to be expected, and amusing at times. Despite Nancy and her friends' proven ability to handle threats, there is a scene in which they defer to a male authority's admonition "'Girls, don't go on this man hunt.

Those fellows are too dangerous. It's a clear and common hallmark of gender stereotypes at the time. Nancy is no damsel in distress! This was much more action-packed than usual, which made it a lot of fun to read. Uncle Rufus' "dialect" was uncomfortable to read, however, but I have to keep reminding myself that these were published such a long time ago in a different world. The description of African Americans in this book is something that might be needed to explain to a younger audience. However, the book depicts how pleasant relationships would have taken place in the South during the 50s. Nancy's teamwork, friendship, smarts, and determination is shown throughout the story.

Still kind of enjoyable in a reminiscent way. Jul 13, IrishFan rated it liked it.

Oh dear well Nancy Drew didn't live up to my childhood memories. Or rather she did, but as an adult I can see what an insufferable busybody she really is. And even I, a the whitest of white people who grew up on snowwhite heroines like Nancy Drew, just kept thinking "white privilege!! It didn't seem overtly racist though I suspect it is and I am oblivious but it did seem very classist. The bad guy turns out to be a poor ish person who managed to get in with "good people" but threw the chance away. I thought they were an item! But no, Ned is merely her "preferred escort". I'm not sure in all honesty I could recommend my niece read vintage Nancy Drew anymore, even though she'd be oblivious to much of its oddness. Too much has changed. I like how in this book people will expect for Nancy, Bess, and George get an easy ride down to New Orleans but, this is a false statement.
