Thank you for offering a way forward after 13 years of flawed methods and overtraining. Jul 05, Kym Jackson rated it really liked it. Pretty useful for designing routines and for the mindset behind weightlifting. Recommended if you are into weightlifting at all. Painstaking in descriptions, honest and realistic in setting expectations, Beyond Brawn is one of the best introductory books on strength training for natural athletes - busy trainers especially will appreciate the abbreviated routines suggested by McRobert.

This is not the book on how to look great for the beach in three months It is a book on what to do if an average guy wants to deadlift pounds after a couple of years Painstaking in descriptions, honest and realistic in setting expectations, Beyond Brawn is one of the best introductory books on strength training for natural athletes - busy trainers especially will appreciate the abbreviated routines suggested by McRobert. Sure, that doesn't sound like much, but can you lift it? And how long have you been training? Beyond Brawn will take you there.

Aug 08, Jack Toothill rated it really liked it. A very in depth look at strength training and bodybuilding. An excellent book for anyone unaware of the importance of strength training in building size. The book becomes somewhat repetitive in places, I believe this is to make sure the points are really drilled home, but it gets a little tiresome in places. However it does a great job of underlining the importance of rest and recovery, and how to go about it, including recovering from injuries and preventing them occurring.

Nov 06, Tom Roberts rated it liked it. This book was okay, I'd rate it at 2.

Beyond Brawn: The Insider's Encyclopedia on How to Build Muscle and Might by Stuart McRobert

I'm not sure what the fuss is about it. The programming is average and not the most effective approach. There are far better results oriented barbell programs out there today. They're simpler and will give far better results. May 27, Patrick rated it it was amazing. This book is highly repetitive but also a gold mine.

I am going to have to re-read this quite a few times to throughly understand and appreciate all of the content. I was originally going to rate this a 4 just because how monotonous it is at times. However I am glad to have finished with a new understanding on how to properly train. Nov 17, Nate Hewitt rated it it was amazing. An excellent, honest, and recommended book for those getting into body building. Contains all you need in the subject of training.

You don't need to read all of it through, but select pages that are useful to you. Jun 18, Darryl rated it really liked it. Good teaching on building muscle for those who are natural. Abbreviated training works well for me, so McRobert's approach to training really made sense. This is one of the few books that I have read twice, back to back. Jul 03, Lee rated it it was amazing Shelves: Excellent book about bodybuilding for beginners and the regular Joe. Very basic advise but a lot of information that most people don't realise.

Would recommend to anyone who is interested in bodybuilding or just regular health and fitness enthusiasts, also useful for more advanced gym-goers. Aug 12, Brett's Books rated it it was amazing. Another great introduction to safe, productive bodybuilding for the average person. Represents growth from Brawn.

This is not the book on how to look great for the beach in three months It is a book on what to do if an average guy wants to deadlift pounds after a couple of years of training. Sure, that doesn't sound like much, but can you lift it? And how long have you been training? Beyond Brawn will take you there. It was recommended by another site I had visited.

I looked through the table of contents to get a sense of the material. I bought the book and read it cover to cover. I read that book cover to cover as well. Both books are very well written and the wise instruction on how to structure your workouts is thorough, straightforward, and very helpful. If I had come across this information many years ago I would have saved myself years of mediocre results.

Beyond Brawn: The Insider's Encyclopedia on How to Build Muscle and Might

I am deep into my first training cycle, and very pleased with my progress. The best compliment I can give both books is that they have become resource guides. I refer to them often when I feel like I need to make adjustments or brush up on some things. It is like having a coach at my finger tips. At the end of the day, though, it is about results.

I have not been disappointed, and nether will you. Today I look forward to my workouts; I am more focused than I have ever been.

Built for the Beach v3.0: Shredded abs and athletic brawn

Much of the material in these books is about finding your passion, being focused. At the age of 58, to be working out as hard as I am, is a privilege. I had been working out for a couple of years and reached a stagnant plateau. I was pleased to maintain the progress I had made, but I wondered if there was anything I could do that would enable me to make further progress. Both of these books are enjoyable, and I recommend both of them.

Because some of these exercises are basic and because I had already done a fair amount of reading in this area, I thought this information would merely repeat what I already knew. But I modified my technique for doing some exercises in accordance with these instructions, and I immediately recognized that both the intensity and the safety of the exercises had increased.

The author persuasively contradicts the vast majority of what has been written about strength training, providing true and invaluable guidance for the large majority of people who are not genetically gifted to be superior athletes. But his advice would surely be helpful to natural athletes too. Most people should use shorter but more intense workouts that are properly balanced with their genetically-determined ability to recover and grow stronger.

This is a very different message from the standard line that says everyone should be doing three complex, full-body workouts every week. McRobert provides specific advice for creating and using a workout schedule that fits one's ability and other activities. And he persuasively explains and argues for using proper exercise technique, resulting in exercise that is very intense but unlikely to produce injury. I am grateful to the author for guiding me in the right direction, and I feel very fortunate to have read about these books on the Amazon site.
