Jonathan, Bellamy, Arndell, Watson, McQuaid, and Philip were all distinctly different characters with wildly varying motivations for going to Australia, dealing with convicts, views on discipline and justice, and humanitarianism.

The conditions the convicts endured in the nearly yearlong passage were abominable beyond words. Having been to a former convict prison, now museum, in Sydney, the long lists of convict crimes and their punishments were stunning. Seven years for the most paltry of crimes; fourteen for slightly more antisocial crimes.
This book also clarifies that many convicts were wrongly arrested, u from England and after arrival in Australia. A lot of inhumanity.
