The tales are wonderful but the forward re. Jack Zipes intro is as good as the tales themselves. A must read for anyone doing research on that period! One person found this helpful. It's rambling, uninteresting, and after 5 pages I skipped it. The Chinese fairy tales are odd. I'm not really sure how else to describe them. Certainly not what I was expecting, nor wanting, even though the first story The Cloak of Dreams was interesting.

All of this is remarkable, original, and uncanny. I recommend that readers go and find some good time to spend with this beautiful book. Jack Zipes's introduction tells its own fascinating tale about how a Hungarian writer and intellectual found redemption in fairy tales. I enthusiastically recommend them to anyone who can still feel the pleasure of being kidnapped by fantasy and being taken away to a land that is both vividly colored and intellectually curious.
The collection is a delight and Jack Zipes's introduction is splendid. The Power of Stories in Childhood. The translations are beautifully poetic and a joy to read.
