This book will appeal to children and adults ages 10 and up. It is not a very difficult book to understand, but it does contain many elaborate descriptions. This book deals with topics such as neighborhood violence, the importance of family, and the different intelligences in our world. It sends a very positive message to the reader as a result. In the beginning her family has to move out of their hometown because too many bad things happen. They moved from Chicago to Michigan. Her little brother Andrew loves his harmonica that his dad gave him when he was a little baby before the father died.

One day Yolonda and Andrew were walking home from school and Yolonda forgets her brother at the park and if you want to know what happen you should read this book. The reason why I liked this book a lot is because it showed how Yolonda really loved her brother Andrew. And how she cared so much about her family and she watched over Andrew so well. I also liked this book because it had a lot of adventures that Yolonda did and some with her little brother.

I think that anybody would love this book and I think you would really enjoy it. Yolanda's sense of herself and her confidence in who she is, is an attitude that all children would do well to imitate, as she deals with prejudices that are less related to race than to the diversity found within each individual.

Fenner's style is rhythmic and musical and her characters are rich and strong. The book depicts how brightly that one person can shine among many and is a testament to the power of the individual.

I don't know how realistic the scenario is, especially in light of the unlikely ending, but the story promotes hope in an unsure and unstable world and maintains that it is through hard work and courage that hope is realized. Yolanda and Andrew's father, a police officer, died when Yolanda was only four-years-old. The only thing he left behind was his Marine Band harmonica, which he passed on to Andrew. Yolanda is extremely uncomfortable in her new school, and often imagines herself back in Chicago, skipping rope, flirting with her crush, Tyrone.

In Grand River, Yolanda doesn't have any friends and she's often teased about her size. The only kid who tries to befriend Yolanda is a strange little girl with whirling eyes named Shirley, whom Yolanda nicknames "Whirly Shirley". Yolanda has many apprehensions about befriending Shirley, such as the fact that she's white, but Yolanda also embraces the opportunity to reinvent herself. She tells Shirley that she is a world class double-dutch roper.

Shirley is impressed with all Yolanda's stories and begs Yolanda to teach her how to jump rope.

Aside from avoiding Shirley's persistent requests to become best friends, Yolanda's time is also spent protecting her brother, Andrew, from the few drug pushers in the park. Yolanda thinks his playing is magnificent!! She doesn't realize how special the music is until it stops. She feels very guilty and upset for the part she plays in Andrews tragedy.

The day the music stopped was the first that Yolanda forgot to pick Andrew up at Aphsalt Hill. When she finally came for him that day, she found that the harmonica was broken. Over the next few days, she was determined to figure out what could have happened to Andrew's harmonica. Then it hit her like a bolt of lightning on a stormy day. Aphsalt Hill, where she found Andrew, is a place where drugies and unfriendly kids "hang out" or prowl around. She realized that the kids at Aphsalt Hill must have broken the harmonica.

She'll never know exactly what Andrew went through that day. All she wants is for Andrew to get his talent back. Aunt Tiny, Yolandas favorite aunt, came to visit them from Chicago. Aunt Tiny suggests they come visit her in their hometown, Chicago. Yolandas mother approves of the idea. They decide a few weeks after Aunt Tiny left, that they woulddrive to Chicago.
