They were the most effective in the entire book for me; so do not stop reading early. One person found this helpful. Nate Pyle very carefully reviews the state of masculinuty in America and traces it's routes back through our countries founding. He demonstrates in a very compelling way how American society sets men up to be pawns in a system whereby their identity is constantly challenged.

So many ways to have a man card revoked yet so few ways to earn one, this book brings a much needed, and refreshing perspective in a time where modern masculinity is in a crisis. Jesus Christ is the Lord of stripping away anything that would separate us from him including these flimsy versions of what it means to be a man and calls us to follow and find our identity solely in him. Nate has a good thesis and develops the thought. I found the book perhaps a little wordy. More emphasis on his stories would have been good. But He develops the thought of the "traditional" view of masculinity with the developing cultural changes and challenges with sensitivity.

Should make you think--whether you are male or female. Nate Pyle hits a home run with this book on, essentially, what it means to be a Christ-like man today.

What Does It Mean to Be a Man? 80+ Quotes on Men & Manhood

He argues for the importance of being vulnerable and known, for looking to Christ for identity, for an idea of "manliness" that seeks to emulate Jesus' gentleness, love, and courage instead of the machismo and celebration of the alpha-male that sometimes invades Christian thought. For me, a Christian man who happens to be also a shy, sports-illiterate artist, the book was encouraging and affirming but also challenging.

It's not easy to truly find your identity in Christ alone. It is easy to hide your brokenness and feelings of insufficiency behind a facade of "doing fine.

He had never wished for anything else but to be a man, live in a manly way, die a manly death.

False Roads To Manhood

To be a man was to forge ever upward toward the peak of manhood, there to die amid the white snows of that peak. Men respond to and admire the qualities that would make men useful and dependable in an emergency. Men have always had a role apart, and they still judge one another according to the demands of that role as a guardian in a gang struggling for survival against encroaching doom.

Everything that is specifically about being a man—not merely a person—has to do with that role. Strength requires an opposing force, courage requires risk, mastery requires hard work, honor requires accountability to other men. Without these things, we are little more than boys playing at being men, and there is no weekend retreat or mantra or half-assed rite of passage that can change that. A rite of passage must reflect a real change in status and responsibility for it to be anything more than theater.

No reimagined manhood of convenience can hold its head high so long as the earth remains the tomb of our ancestors. Real women will always be relieved and grateful when men are willing to be men. Masculinity is risky and elusive. It is achieved by a revolt from woman, and it confirmed only by other men. Manhood coerced into sensitivity is no manhood at all.

Lessons in Manliness From Hardboiled Detective Philip Marlowe

Man is never so manly as when he feels deeply, acts boldly, and expresses himself with frankness and with fervor. I should not like to be merely a doctor, a great lawyer, a great minister, a great politician.
