Our authors start their story of the game with Russell and the great Celtics vs. Lakers rivalry that the Celtics won repeatedly establishing them as one of the finest teams in all of sports. Jerry West, a Laker guard thought by many to be among the best guards to ever play the game, had this to say about the Laker losses: It hurt so much because, as they say, you put so much into it. Their rivals, the Boston Celtics, had Larry Bird and a great supporting cast to give the Lakers a true test of greatness, and they were not found wanting.

Bird says it well: How good are the Lady Huskies? This idea that you have to win every game, that wears on you after a while. Charles Barkley tells us what many believe to be true: Readers of this review will have their own list of the super stars of the game and the chapter called The Greatest of All Time will let readers compare their own list with what players, coaches, and reporters think about this question.

It is perhaps appropriate that Magic Johnson has the final say in this excellent book about basketball: It is essentially a look at the highs and lows of professional basketball history pieced together by a series of interviews with significant basketball figures including players Kobe, LeBron, Walton, etc. I am not a fan of relating history through interviews in a page book so I would have appreciated a more narrative form, but the book is ambitious in its desire to paint a broad story.

There is an effort to slice deeper into the obvious headlines to find nuggets perhaps not previously known, but for the most part, I, as a long time NBA fan, found little new revealing information in this book and sifting through an interview format was tedious, at times.

But the legwork required to gather the hundreds of former stars, coaches, and others to sit for interviews and offer printable quotes about the game of basketball from Naismith to Lebron is noteworthy. All in all, a quick and sometimes fascinating look at the history of the game as told by many who took part in its development. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. As an oral history vs. But, I do appreciate well-edited and organized oral histories like this one, and they've done a very good job putting it all together and if you go to ESPN, you'll see that this is style is done a lot now.

The NBA stories are all solid and the interviews did a good job drawing out their subjects I wish there'd been a little more blunter honesty from them - maybe more self-criticism.

FORTNITE "BASKETBALL LOVE STORY " SKITT.

But, still, these stories were all neat and interesting. Of course Michael Jordan's not involved, because he has to sit high on the throne and not come down to the mortal ken, but whatever - his loss. He doesn't seem to recognize that without involvement in these sorts of projects, he fades away a little more.

On the flip side, Bill Simmons IS here, and while I liked his own basketball book, he's "peak Simmons" here, and I don't mean that as a compliment. But, even when he's annoying, he's still compelling so it's fine but there's a few passages about the Olympics and it's SO self-satisfied on his part. The title is fitting - the authors are not here to judge or criticize - these are stories about love of the game, playing, planning, winning, losing - so that's what comes through.

If you want hard-edged analysis, go elsewhere. I liked the tone overall except for the slight criticism above. There are a few short journalistic vignettes throughout the book, and I think one advantage of an oral history format is you can pick it up and read at any point..

It's not a book that demands to be read front to back, but in any way you want. There are plenty of narrative stories around, and this is a good format for the shorter memories contained here.

Of a game that demands everything of those who love it, yet gives so much back in return.

To tell this story, acclaimed journalists Jackie MacMullan, Rafe Bartholomew and Dan Klores embarked on a groundbreaking mission to interview a staggering lineup of basketball trailblazers. J and Jerry West, spoke movingly about their greatest passion. Iconic coaches like Phil Jackson and Coach K opened up like never before. Those who shattered glass ceilings, from Bill Russell and Yao Ming to Cheryl Miller and Lisa Leslie, explained what it really took to lay claim to their place in the game.

At once a definitive oral history and something far more revelatory and life affirming, Basketball: A Love Story is the defining untold oral history of how basketball came to be, and what it means to those who love it.

A sweeping and revelatory history of basketball, drawing upon hundreds of hours of interviews with the greatest players, coaches, executives, and journalists in the history of the game. Most impressive was the extraordinary quality of the interviews. Rafe Bartholomew is the author of Pacific Rims: More about Rafe Bartholomew. This is not a book for people who just think basketball is OK. This is a book for people who care. Jackie and Rafe have done a masterful job of historical hoops excavation.

There has never been a deeper and more star-studded cast of interviewees about basketball, and the authors pull unique insights out of them.
