The Final Word Red Scorpion is a mostly routine '80s action flick, but if you were weaned on Cannon asskickers or are just a sucker for Dolph Lundgren, this Blu-ray disc's definitely worth checking out. The high-def remaster and six-channel remix are both first-rate, there are a hell of a lot of extras for this sort of movie, and it's all of fifteen bucks on Amazon. I realize that, in , a movie production would be insane to allow its lead actor to perform a stunt where he leaps from a fast-moving motorcycle onto a truck as Lundgren does in Red Scorpion.

Like I said before: Video Red Scorpion is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1. The transfer for the film — first released in the United States in — shines brightest during daytime outdoor scenes depicting the incomparable African landscape. After some delays, much of the filming took place in Namibia.

The color and contrast is strongest during these sequences. Unfortunately, many indoor and nighttime scenes look hopelessly grainy and the black levels are a bit off. There is also an impressive amount of ambient noises, a necessity for a movie set almost entirely outdoors. An ever-present Russian Hind gunship, in particular, does a nice job of filling your speakers. The only negative is that the dialogue is not always easy to understand. Special Features The bonus material is easily my favorite part of the Blu-ray and all special features are presented in HD.

An interesting chat that basically plays out with Thompson interviewing Zito while the film just happens to be playing in the background. He also talks about Red Scorpion with both affection and a bit of resignation. He mentions the troubled production and an ending to the film that was replaced by a more truncated conclusion. Though the video transfer is only passable, the film is an interesting failure that will delight s action movie junkies and…not too many other people. The enclosed DVD features a standard-def, anamorphic transfer from the same source. It is a damn-near flawless transfer, with bright, stable colors, sharp details, and a pleasingly film-like patina of grain.

The extensive supplemental features include an informative if slightly dry audio commentary track by director Vito and Mondo Digital's Nathaniel Thompson; "Hell Hath No Fury," a terrific new on-screen interview with Dolph, where he discusses his early career up to and including RED SCORPION; "Assignment Africa," an in-depth video interview with producer Jack Abramoff, discussing the origins of the film and the difficulties of its production; "Scorpion Tales," a video interview with make-up artist Tom Savini; an animated still gallery; the original theatrical trailer and a selection of vintage TV spots.

If you're a fan of 80's action flicks, you'll definitely want to check this disc out. Highly and enthusiastically recommended. C'est vraiment un dieu ce mec! I've watched this film a dozen or so times over the past decade. I finally bought it on DVD because my tape won't last forever. Special Features are sparse I seem to recall some bios and, maybe, some stills. There's no commentary or "making of" feature. It doesn't make sense to me when I think about why, but there it is!

I really like this movie! Another fun 80s action movie! I really enjoyed it and wished that Russian double barrel machine gun had more screen time! Overall a good film I liked Dolph character very badass! Lots of shooting and things blowing up! Very good film, no complaints! Produced by Convicted Lobbyist Jack Abramoff. It is rumored that Jack Abramoff earned roughly ten million dollars after taxes in his first and apparently only movie production. In other words, he was already a wealthy man before entering the political world of Washington, DC.

Abramoff even wrote the screenplay along with another member of his family, Robert. Alas, this movie concerning the Cold War battles fought within the African hemisphere leaves much to be desired. Dolph Lundgren was still somewhat a major name in and could basically carry the movie all by himself. As matter of fact, that's precisely what he does! Red Scorpion was modestly successful only because of his involvement.

Lundgren plays the role of a Russian special ops soldier who eventually sees the light and becomes an arch foe of the evil USSR. Emmet Walsh is a journalist willing to take great chances to get the story out about the viciousness of the Soviet empire.

The plot makes little sense. It is the never-ending violence and action scenes which might halfway satisfy an unsophisticated audience. No, this movie doesn't even come close to winning any major motion picture awards. Who should see this so-so action film? I would recommend only those who find the Jack Abramoff aspect of particular interest.

Perhaps it might help one better understand his ultimate fall from grace. The man didn't create a cinematic masterpiece.
