It might be something as simple as not screwing your gas cap back in enough, to something far more complicated or damaging to your car. That's why owning an OBD2 scanner is so important and useful. I've always meant to buy one of these, but in the past the cost has been prohibitive.
Car Diagnostic Scanner
I remember units like this going for far FAR more just a short time ago, and they weren't as feature packed as this one is. I went outside and plugged the Autophix into my car's OBD2 port under the dash Infiniti G35 just to see it work and get familiar with it, and in the short time I used it I couldn't be happier. Here's what I like so far about the Autophix scanner: It's very easy to read and the display produces very sharp text. It's not mentioned in the description on the item page, but the cord measures 31" long 3. As you can see in the accompanying pictures, the 4 simple buttons on the front of the unit control every function, and very easily at that.
The menu screen prompts you to make your choices, and you simply move "up arrow " or "down arrow " and hit "enter" or "exit back screen. Fortunately or unfortunately for review purposes , my car didn't have any codes pending or stored. Had there been, you'd simply google the code and then clear it when you're ready to do so.

Overall, I'm very happy with my Autophix scanner and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Great Quality at Low Price! I just got this this weekend and used it as soon as I opened the package. I work in an office and am not a mechanic so I like that I can just hook up my car in seconds and it tells me the code for why my Service Engine Soon light is coming on which happens more and more frequently as my Suburban ages.
The small booklet that comes with it has all the codes and what they mean. I found out that it's just an emissions thing that can wait for the truck's next oil change.
