However writer Christopher Yost deftly scripts a "secret history" of the X-Men's encounters with the evolutionaries. Through a series of flashbacks Yost shows the original X-Men think First Class confronting Magneto and contesting the evolutionaries' vision of the world.

Yost expertly weaves in the narrative of the present as well that has Magneto fighting along side the X-Men to save humanity. Without giving away any plot spoilers, these issues worked surprisingly well.

I appreciated the homage to the original Giant-sized x-men that witnessed the transformation of the classic x-men into the uncanny x-men that most readers have know for the better part of forty years. The team of artists Medina, Vlasco, and Talajic are superb. I particularly liked how well Talajic rendered the classic uniforms--and if you look closely there is even a nod to the original Wolverine outfit hint: look for whiskers.

I feel that this collection of x-men hit that perfect balance. There is plenty of history in these pages without getting overly tied down with baggage. This graphic novel stands well on it's own, but I will certainly be looking forward to the next one because Cyclops has made one powerful enemy in this book. All-in-all I think x-fans young and old will enjoy this collection.

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase. Good story and art. If your an X-men fan you will like it if your not maybe this tpb is not the one for you. Fun X-Men book that you don't need to know a ton about what is happening in all the other X-books to enjoy reading. Format: Paperback. In this volume of the X-Men series, we are told a story about the X-Men from two perspectives. In the past, the original X-Men face the threat of the Evolutionaries, who wish to ensure the safety of mutantkind by exterminating all Homo sapiens.

In the present, the Evolutionaries arrive on Utopia attempting to enact the same plan, but they also intend to kill Cyclops. The story feels very much like it pays homage to the old-fashioned tales from the Silver Age. I feel that it was a nice change of pace from the darker tone the X-Men stories have been taking lately. However, I have a couple of minor problems with the story. In the past montage, Emma Frost was about the same age as Cyclops and the rest of the First Class group.
