In fact, we were given a choice of restaurants. Usually for the tours, the fee is less for more people. They also create tours according to the needs and wishes of groups and seem to do really terrific activities to engage young people, judging by some of the tours Chris described to us. I would absolutely use Sendero Panama again and recommend them to anyone who wants a thorough tour packed with sites and information.

Christian Gernez is the guy. He grew up in Panama, went to college in the states studying marine biology, returned to Panama to become a naturalist guide and started his own tour agency called Sendero Panama. He made our trip fabulous. His wife Micaela Gernez Schmidt-- Mica for short--set us up with a day adventure to the Embera Indians from a ride up the Chagras River in a dugout canoe and then 2 days in the San Blas islands visiting the indigenous Kunas.

Christian was our guide, and also took us on a half day tour of the canal which turned out much more fascinating than any of us expected. We finished our trip with 2 days in Boquete hiking the rainforest etc and Mica set us up in the most charming hotel, the Panamonte. Anyway, Mica and Christian made this an especially fabulous trip for us, much much better than if we had just wandered around on our own the whole time. Christian and Mica put together the most fascinating trips imaginable, introducing us to so much richness in just 1 week One of us had discovered their company, Sendero Panama, after painstaking research on travel blogs and postings.

While they were consistently recommended online, we were all blown away by how wonderful they were to work with. Mica and Christian patiently emailed back and forth with our lead person, in the weeks leading up to the trip, fine-tuning what we were hoping to experience: time learning about two different indigenous groups Embera and Kuna people in their villages; a half-day, fascinating and comprehensive visit to the canal and its historical surroundings, and a few days around Boquete, walking through the rain forest, visiting a local coffee farm and its amazing processing facilities, while based in an exquisite country Inn with gourmet dining.

Christian is, without a doubt, one of the most knowledgeable and caring guides we have ever known. He is widely read, not just in ecological sciences, but in history, sociology, and economics.

He had endless patience with our flood of questions and pointed out the complex and evolving development of the natural and political landscape of this country. Every one of his recommendations --for eating out in Panama City, for choosing the best trail to hike in Boquete, for visiting one of the most authentic Panamanian coffee plantations--was right on the mark. His humor and easy-going spirit made traveling with him an absolutely delightful experience.

This small company is stellar and we definitely look forward to another visit to Panama arranged by Sendero Panama. This was the highlight of our week in Panama. Christian is highly knowledgeable with regard to birds, animals, and plants as well as the history of Panama. He showed us many species and taught us a great deal about the Panamanian ecosystem.

It was great fun, including a very good picnic lunch and a climb up the observation tower at PRDC. Santa Fe. Profile JOIN.
