The Lebanese author was of Maronite heritage, but his work transcends any sectarian bias to present a vision of simple charity and tolerance as a beacon for the future. It elicited from me a convulsive bout of deep mourning, sorrow for all that had happened in the lives of the people Susan Howatch had created in this entire series.

I had to put the book down and bury my head in my hands and work through the grief of all the entire Starbridge Series had meant. And I loved it. Start from the beginning of the series and work your way to this book. You will eventually need to read the St. Benet's Trilogy, but the six books of the Starbridge Series stand alone and apart. Every year the Nobel Prize for Literature is announced and Susan Howatch is not the winner is an affront to any Justice in the Universe. I rate this book with 4 stars primarily because it is near the end of a lengthy series of novels Susan Howatch penned, most of which would deserve ten stars here, if it were possible.

It's not the best of the series, but it holds a special place in my heart because, having read all the rest and knowing this volume had come out a few years earlier, the man I just happened to relieve in Iraq in had it and had just finished reading it. He left it with me and it was a solace to me at a very dark time of my life.

Bodmer manages to present many of the more interesting anecdotes of linguistic lore in a truly accessible fashion, which alone is worth the time of working through this sizable volume. Anyone who loves learning languages will certainly benefit from his practical advice on how to focus on a combination of important vocabulary and how to triangulate from what you already know into a mastery of virtually every major language in Europe.

A brother and sister team of self-taught commandos set out on a rescue operation in , but when things go wrong, split-second decisions ending up changing both their lives forever. We follow the second generation of this family, similarly trained but following different paths in their lives. Twin brothers Andrew and Stefan have been living in relative peace and quiet in the United States -- Andrew in the military and Stefan as an Orthodox priest -- and their childhood training in combat is almost a forgotten memory, until a phone call brings the past into the present and starts a chain of events that lead them into a cascading series of dangers that test their training and bring them up against enemies they didn't know they had.

I'm a harsh grader and so I'm going to hold back that fifth star just because I found the pacing in the first quarter of the book to be too fast for me. But that may be a plus to others, and overall, I think that the plusses far outweigh my minus. Definitely a page turner! One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful.

What a story this is! I'm a Romanian currently living and working in America, and I'm too young to remember the days of Communism, but I've heard enough to know that this novel describes how things were. This is an adventure story starting in and going to the present day. If you've never been to Romania, you can travel there in this novel. Every detail is so accurate. I laughed a lot but I also have to warn you, more than once the book made me cry. In case you don't know, the words "A Place of Brightness" comes from a prayer we Orthodox say for the dead.

And faith is important to the characters in this story. But it's also an exciting story of adventure, conspiracies, and a romance in there as well. I can't wait to read more in upcoming books of this series. This is an amazing book. I can ALWAYS tell what's going to happen before it happens when I read a novel, but this one kept me guessing all the way till the end.

The characters are incredibly life-like, and it's easy to become attached to them. They sound so natural, talking to each other, even when they are in the most extraordinary situations.

See a Problem?

They talk just like the people who walk around in my world, so I could still relate to them even when they were having adventures that will never I hope be part of my ordinary mundane life. I also loved how well the book combined high-suspense spy-thriller action with human drama. I highly recommend this book, but be prepared to stay up late to finish it! The fact that my father's family is Romanian spurred me to download the sample chapters, but by the time I finished reading the free excerpt, I couldn't order the rest of the book quickly enough.

A Place of Brightness is a spy thriller that belongs in the league of the Jason Bourne books, but the fresh setting, characters and plot puts it in a league of its own.

Shatter Me Featuring Lzzy Hale - Lindsey Stirling

I loved that it integrated Romania customs and religion seamlessly into the storyline. It's clear that Massey has spent time in Romania or around Romanian culture. Instead of the same old backdrop of Paris or Amsterdam, Massey takes the reader into a new world. The author has succeeded in creating a page turner that also challenges and surpasses the conventional mass media reading level that is pervasive in the genre.

The characters and subsequent relationships therein are rich, possess depth and are immediately familiar. I will be watching for the next installment, in the bookstore The story of a family of Haiduci fighters against the communist regime, devolves into a trite spy thriller with little historical background or insight. The characters are wooden, the plot is not all that complicated to figure out, and the dialogue is stilted.

Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. I chose to read this book for some historical background prior to a planned trip to Romania, but I found the plot to be simplistic, the characters to be stereotypical, and the historical background to be very light. The novel revolves around a family who fought the communists and the beginning tells their story. We then move forward in time and discover that two sons have survived and one is a priest and another is a soldier.

They return to Romania because there is a possibility that their uncle I chose to read this book for some historical background prior to a planned trip to Romania, but I found the plot to be simplistic, the characters to be stereotypical, and the historical background to be very light. They return to Romania because there is a possibility that their uncle their mother's brother is not dead after all and there they get involved in trying to stop a plot to overthrow the government.

Really, after a few weeks, I cannot even recall the characters' names. Hilarious, but in the wrong way.

I loved the part where ex-communists are trying to overthrow the Romanian government in this one. And the part about using a shepherd's techniques to fight against all threats to Romania's sovereignty would, in reality, mean that every morning at 5 AM, for a few hundred years, a few people would wake up and start spitting sunflower seeds at the current batch of invaders. Otherwise, just a thriller. Mar 18, Pamela Z. In this novel, I explored Communist Romania and followed a family as they fought for Faith and Freedom.

I cried my eyes out on several occasions while reading it, as well as laughed out loud. You'll love the characters you meet here.
