Rapunzel - English Fairy Tale and Bedtime Stories for Children

A worthy successor to the legacy of one of my favourite fairy tales, it bears an unapologetic, ruthless grace, like a blade slicing through platitudes. Woodland fairy tale foliage later turns up as moss and ferns chapter 42, Watershed.

See a Problem?

In chapter 1, the protagonist leans out of a window in response to a man who has been posing naked in a life-drawing class. Her gesture is prompted by a complex mixture of curiosity, warning and regret, for having inadvertently set her grandmother Andrea - an academic feminist tartar - upon him. He, Ryan Prince, glances up at her and their eyes meet.

By part IV, Sage has come into her own, instructing young women in an art class on the transience and misconceptions of beauty.

It is also in this segment of the book that its female protagonists strive for a meeting of minds, a compromise or reconciliation, if not perfect resolution. Fiona Price has successfully ramped up both extremes in this story to illustrate this polarity. Both forces are rampant. They signal variant forms of imprisonment - even wilderness, for being lost is a limitation, where boundlessness becomes the ultimate boundary, manifesting in unbridled relativism; as Terry Eagleton has argued in The Illusions of Postmodernism , once we dismiss all morality as merely relative, we can abdicate from any moral responsibility for anything, thus may permit atrocity without condemnation.

Yet this novel is not didactic.

It is questioning. Eat Your Veggies, Goldilocks! Goldilocks only wants to eat ice cream and jelly! She only likes things 'just so', and she hates eating vegetables! But when the bears catch her in their home, will they want to eat her for dinner? Below the misty blue mountain was a wild, dark forest and by the wild, dark forest was a village.

The village had a stream and a duck pond and an old red apple tree and it was home to Cinderella and her fairytale friends.

The Fairytale Friends series brings fairy tales into the modern day and features scenarios that young children can relate to and learn from. Each story in this new picture book series focuses on a different fairy tale character, a different strength or core virtue, and a challenge to overcome, often with the help of their friends. Readers will enjoy spotting characters from other books and recognizing key elements of the original fairy tale while enjoying the new twist. Notes and questions at the back of the book will summarize what the character has learnt and prompt further discussion while activities will provide more fairytale fun.

Each title backs up themes found in the PSHE personal, social and health education curriculum.
