These stories provide various perspectives of the many ways we relate to firearms. I am especially happy that there does not seem to be an adopted view that guns are either to be avoided or to be cherished. These are diverse short stories that make you reflect on the writers, their characters and how they interact with firearms. Thought provoking and entertaining. One person found this helpful.

This is a great collection of short stories that gets at the prevalence of guns in American culture from many different angles. But they're all taut well-told jewels. Each is very different one from the other, so from beginning to end you are really taken on a diverse journey, with many surprising turns. Please make the extra effort to purchase this book at a local book store.

Not only does Lock and Load pose some interesting questions and ideas about guns and our identity as Americans, its a fantastic collection of short fiction from master writers as well as some new authors, who can clearly hold their own. I would recommend this collection both for readers interested in the topic and those just looking for a great short fiction collection.

This is an excellent collection of short stories on a timely topic.

I've never shot a gun myself but I know how central guns are to who we are as Americans. It's not a topic we can ignore. All we can do, as informed citizens, as readers, and as writers, is to try to capture all the nuance and to tell gun stories without romanticizing the violence. This last point is key. We have to be honest about the ugliness of violence.

And the writers in this book are unflinchingly honest. From What could be more dramatic and timely than fiction with guns at their center? From the opening story by Annie Proulx to the last story by Pinkney Benedict, the gun violence and potential violence is anything but romanticized. The writing is sometimes funny and often lyrical, but the violence itself is not glamorous. And that is an impressive achievement on the editor's part.
