Not that great compared to some of the other books in the series, but still worth buying! If nothing else then at least to complete it: The thing that sets it apart are some of the bi-characters - they feel like real people and sometimes you're sad when they die or happy when they don't - that part of the book is VERY successful. The ending of this book the usual Bob Mayer tough and gritty writing style but overall this was not his best work.
The author gets carried away with the geopolitical struggles of the African continent and if this was a history novel would be great but it became bogged down and to me took the flow out of the book. Bob Mayer is a very good writer. He's got the background to draw on to tell a good tale. The main characters are well developed and fun to follow through several books.
This book deals with a viral outbreak in sub-Saharan Africa. The story is close enough to what you read in the news to be pretty frightening. The action is pretty non-stop. Ok, when I first saw the title I thought, "here goes another zombie apocalypse novel. I rated this novel high because it does an outstanding job of describing special operations and what goes into planning as well as honing in on the human aspects of soldiering. This was a quick read and the pace was fast.
The novels voice through the main characters was believable and well orchestrated. This is the first novel I've read of Bob Mayer and I look forward to reading his plethora of novels. I personally enjoyed this book in the "Green Beret" series. The military descriptions were spot on. The descriptions of Angola and parts of Africa were accurate.
I loved the story. It had me enthralled and captivated till the end.

He details the rational explanation of how a virus would spread with the science behind it and the military response, showing clearly how actions lead to consequences until the big finish and reveal comes off as completely credible. Wild action and adventure here for the armchair traveler who doesn't do actual bugs and dirt! One person found this helpful. The Army learns of the viral outbreak us via footage that Connor shot. Two Epidemiologists are sent to try to locate the source of the virus and hopefully a cure or at least a vaccine.
I wondered a bit about this. With such a horribly lethal and unknown virus on the loose, you would figure they would send a plethora of epidemiologists, virologists, etc.

Ex-Special Forces member Riley accompanies a news reporter on a military mission into northern Angola. Just as the mission gets started, a deadly virus starts spreading throughout Angola wiping out entire villages and before you know it, Riley, the reporter, cameraman, medic, and company get exposed.
With certain and quick death threatening them, they risk everything to find the cause and even the name of the virus in order to find a way to stop it.. The virus or the team. It's a race to the end and there are a lot more interested parties on the ground in Angola such as rebels, diamond seekers and the South African forces on a similar mission in southern Angola. This story I sure hope it's fiction has multi layers of plot that the virus ties together. So believable that you're sure to think and re-think about it.
