His new colleagues are two brothers, Doopy and Goshy who can't speak and is madly in love with a plant , the masochistic Rufshod, an older clown called Winston and their leader Gonko, a sociopathic hardnose with a love of violence.

Big-top bogey men

For Jamie, it's a rude shock made worse by the fact that when he applies the make-up he becomes the nastiest clown of all, a destructive and unstable psychopath called JJ. The circus is a dangerous place of long-held grudges and rivalries. Its owners, the brothers Kurt and George Pilo, are constantly trying to kill each other, while the clowns have a natural enemy in the acrobats.

JJ and Jamie also spend much of their time thinking of ways they can kill off their unwanted alter egos. The ultimate role of the circus is to deprive its customers of their souls. It's an elaborate and well-conceived system, but the gist of it is that punters enter the Pilo Circus unwittingly via real world circuses and while they're there, parts of their souls slough off them in crystals which are then collected and turned into a magic powder that allows your wishes to come true; and that is the currency in which the members of the circus get paid.

However, rebellion is in the air and things spiral out of control, unleashing an orgy of violence. The Pilo Family Circus is an excellently coherent act of imagination. It's funny, violent and full of bizarre characters who inhabit an alternate universe with an internally consistent logic. It might not be the most profound piece of literature you'll ever read, but it doesn't pretend to be, either.

Its ideas are firmly subordinate to the story. Elliot's novelistic verve for building chains of contingency reminds me of the playful Paul Auster. The plot is full of wonderful grotesqueries and unfolds at a cracking pace.
