Use story maps to help students identify and organize the main components of the reading material.

Review and provide definitions for any new vocabulary that will be found in the reading sections. Teach the student how to subvocalize when reading. Others should not be able to hear the student reading. Reading aloud is a good strategy to help with comprehension, but for some students, it slows down the reading process and can be frustrating. Silent reading can be hard for kids with attention issues.

Teach students techniques to monitor how well they understand what they're reading. Practice paraphrasing and summarizing paragraphs, asking questions about the material while reading, making predictions about what may happen next, and rereading for better clarity.

When students read material they may benefit from using a tape recorder to summarize these processes with guided help from the teacher. Another idea is for the teacher to help the student underline key ideas.

The feeling of mastery and the wish to experience it again transform a child from a reluctant, fearful learner into a self-motivated player with a can-do attitude. Show your child that you value and support him.

Recognition—the feeling of being valued by others, especially by those whose opinions you respect—reinforces mastery and leads to a greater feeling of connectedness. Approval from parents, teachers, and peers for a job well done reconnects children to the wider world.

A program appropriate to a child with dyslexia might include these features, says Dr. Cruger adds that an important part of supporting kids with dyslexia is finding ways to decrease their discomfort about reading, and to make learning to read enjoyable, not humiliating. That means minimizing the amount of time you spend correcting the child, and maximizing encouragement of even small gains. Practicing reading helps typical readers get better, but can be a source of distress for dyslexic readers.
