The pressure from the high water blew the covers off storm sewers on Riverside Avenue, forcing sandbags to be placed on top of them. And the chunks of ice damaged the old Sartell bridge below the dam when they rammed against it. But Sartell was far from the only place battling flooding that April. The record snowfall of the winter of led to flooding in St. Cloud along both the Mississippi and Sauk rivers. Further south, in Mankato, the rising Minnesota River forced National Guard troops to help evacuate thousands of residents. The catastrophe was wide enough in scope that President Lyndon Johnson visited the state to inspect the situation.
Improvements have been made since then. There's a floodwall in Sartell above the dam now. The old bridges have been replaced.
