However, the circumstances that would have led to his gift of such a subject to his patron remain unknown.

Besides a token of appreciation it could well have been a sign of gratitude for a past commission or a gift in exchange for a future one. We can further speculate whether the choice of Cleopatra could have been somehow related to Tollet. The short period between the two events could lie behind the subtle allusion to both.

Merian depicts a beautiful and peaceful death in which suffering plays no part in the scene, and the inscription on the print warns the viewer of the dangers of amorous passion.
