While the Israelis are vilified for op- pressing the Palestinians, the Syrians continue their own "iron fist" policy to maintain order in Lebanon and ensure that the PLO does not threaten Syrian interests. The West Germans recently uncovered evidence sug- gesting a link between Syria and the bombing of a Berlin discotheque, again reaffirming President Hafez Assad's role as one of the principal spon- sors of international ter- rorism.
These revelations come only a few months after the United States resumed relations with Syria. Only the most committed Arabists in tne State Department could nave believed that the Syrian President had abandoned sup- Port for terrorism against the United States and Israel. The treatment of the Palesti- nians has been blamed for re- cent unrest in Egypt but the truth is that the Egyptians have no greater love for their raiestinian brothers than does the rest of the Arab world, which has refused to lift a finger to ameliorate their plight.
The instability in Egypt is a result of fundamentalist op- postion to President Hosni Mubarak and the desire of the militants to turn Egypt into an Islamic republic.

The Palesti- nian riots in Israel serve obly as a pretext for Mubarak's enemies to sow the seeds of rebellion. It is not the Israeli treatment of the Palestinians that threatens Mubarak, however.
