Although a bit grizzly towards the end, I found that I did enjoy this mystery from Matthew Reilly. Matthew has taken Princess Elizabeth I real tutor and woven a tale of mystery that is very good, with for me anyway the likable character of Roger Ascham. This was a really good mystery with a good set of characters and well plotted and written.

I know Matthew has written The Tournament as the next full length mystery, but I would love to see more Roger Ascham novels and short stories in the future. This short story by Mathew Reilly is the prequel to his new book "The Tournament". Isabella, the Kings favourite prostitute has gone missing and Henry wants Roger to find out what has happened. I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of "The Tournament" so I read this short story afterwards but had I not already read "The Tournament" it would have been an excellent introduction to the characters in the story.

I enjoyed this short murder mystery and would recommend it to those thinking of reading the "The Tournament" or those who have already enjoyed the book. This book is meant as an introduction to the author's novel 'The Tournament. The story revolves around the disappearance of a harlet and Roger Ascham is tasked by the King himself to solve the mystery. An okay storyline, however, it is extremely short, so naturally I could not give it more stars as it lacked in depth. Being a massive fan of Matthew Reillys' books fast paced, adrenalin pumping, page turning, gun blazing, explosive save the girl and save the world type of stuff , I must admit I was a little unsure about the different genre for his new book 'tournament'.

Explosive thrillers to murder mystery I never have been much of a murder mystery fan for the exception of Doyle's famous Sherlock Holmes books but having now read 'tournament' I can safely say it is a very good book and an enjoyable read. You don't need a head for history, reading his new book taught me more switching a few chapters than I remember from school. That said, I highly recommend this short story before starting his new book.

It is a fantastic introduction to the main characters in the book, allowing you to get a feel for them before the main event. This book also gives you a feel for the genre and for Matthew's style of writing for his new book. So, even though I am looking forward to Matthews next explosive adventure, I would recommend this short story for anyone who is unsure about his new book, Or even for anybody who is looking for a quick read murder mystery. It is free and only takes a couple of hours to read.

Don't bother. Henry VIII is depicted in the most unrealistic way. This is very, very bad historical writing.

I didn't get past the first page or so. He made Henry VIII look and sound like a rather thick boss of a rather small, not very successful company. One person found this helpful. Decent short story, but it finishes abruptly without much resolution or explanation. It's almost like the author got bored and thought he'd end it quicker. The rest of the book a third!

I am a fan of Matthew Reilly and this was ok but by no means an essential read got the Kindle addition very cheap as only a short story so was happy but wouldn't say go out of your way to read it. A short piece of fiction that promised better to come. However, I got the distinct impression it was a dashed-off affair with short-cuts taken all over the place. Not much time for character development I think Matthew should withdraw this book and re-write it without the short-cuts. It has all the elements a good tale This one wasn't up to his usual standard.

Roger Ascham and the King's Lost Girl

The plot was weak. And he was clearly a beloved son: despite his illegitimacy, the Earl had sent him to Cambridge with a sizeable pension. Ascham handed the young man the quadrant. Higginbotham took the device and turned it sideways to look at it more closely. I love to know the inner workings of things, he said absently. I like your modifications. Ascham was both surprised and impressed at the speed with which the young man had assessed the purpose of his adjustments.

I confess I do not venture to that part of town very often so I have not seen your work at the ruins. I want to be a surgeon. Ascham nodded. Good for you. Ascham retrieved his quadrant from the lad and, taking Besss hand in his, strode down the length of the hall. Ascham caught many a curious glance and even a few pitying ones from members of the throng as he passed them by.

And there, looming at the end of the pathway made by the crowd, sat King Henry VIII, legs spread wide, fists resting on his armrests, staring down at them. Ascham wondered if anyone else saw the irony of a king who had dispossessed the Catholic Church of its riches sitting on a throne in a grand chapel that had been built for that very Church. He doubted it.

Ascham and Bess stopped before the king, holding hands, and for a horrifying moment the hall went silent. And then his face broke into a broad grin. Come here, my gorgeous little princess! Bess walked toward her father, shoulders hunched and head bent, blushing. In so many ways, Ascham thought, she was beyond her yearsbut in the presence of her father she became a little girl 8M a t t h e w r e i l l y again.

Aschams heart went out to her. Are you doing your sums, little one? And your Greek?

I am told it is improving. Tagged as battle , carthage , death , elephants , fighting , Rome , Swords , war. For my reading pleasure this year I had a few attempts at trying something different. Phil Hogan A Pleasure and a Calling review. Simon Beckett Stone Bruises Review. Apart from the authors, the people who have helped make this year possible are the publishers, this year, more than any other they have been amazing, I balk at saying one might be better thank another, even at naming the individuals, if i missed just one i would kick myself, They are all so wonderful.

This is a group of people who spend their time helping someone the authors succeed in their profession and passion, and to do it they help another group of people, like me explore a love of reading, at the same time many of them exploring their own deep passion for words, books, writing and being nice. So a huge huge thank you one and all, to the great people, in PR, marketing, sales, editing etc at all the publisher. You know who you are, please know i appreciate everyone of you, and every book you send. Special mention also to book shop of the year IMHO Goldsboro Books , who keep the fine art of book collecting alive and well.

I found it impossible to do a single top 5 or top 10 of books for , so i did 3 genres instead cop out and even then i feel i cheated so many great writers and books out of a mention.

These lists are books that just spoke to me directly this year. Terry Hayes book was a revelation in thriller terms, a book that was just simply superb, if you have not read it you really must. David Gibbins, not only an amazing author who gets better with every book, but a truly nice person whom i have had the pleasure to get to know a little this year. Chris Kuzneski, brilliant new series, and for me great to know there is a whole other series i have not read and has no joined my TBR pile.
