Hesitantly, I passed through the doorway, entering the small stone sanctuary inside. A banyan tree stood proudly, light peeping down from the ceiling, sun rays dappling throughout the room. So engrossed was I in the tree that I nearly missed a small Ganesha statue at its base. Yet, a few regular pilgrims were placing flowers on it and lighting small incense sticks in front. And it was there that my dad told me her story. My grandmother travelled to the Kaveri river outside Bangalore to pray.

As she stood in the crystal-clear waters, her hand brushed against a black stone, which appeared carved. To her surprise, she drew out a Ganesha. A small statue. Nothing glamorous and yet at the same time, its simplicity could not be left in a river. She took the Ganesha back to Bangalore and placed it under the banyan tree in the fields near her house.

After word got out about the Ganesha statue at the tree, others came there to pray too. What had started out as a simple site for herself soon brought a village together. Years later, a stone temple was built on the spot, golden deities were placed in the front hall, and the Ganesha was relegated to the back room. The story transported me back to her Bangalore. A place where a simple statue could become a temple.

Where empty fields could become a city.

Now that she’s gone, our family is only beginning to understand their codependent life together.

Where a girl who grew up in a village in India could raise my dad who immigrated to the U. It was a story about how anyone could end up anywhere. How, without losing their essence, simple things could become grand. Sign in. Get started. The Temple My Grandmother Built.
