It tells the stories of all the most famous and noteworthy Victoria Cross winners. The book's author General Sir Peter de la Billiere brilliantly explores analyzes the different aspects of courage, including hot-blooded courage and cold-blooded courage, then moves on to tell of the history of the VC.
Later chapters explore the lives of hot-blooded Guy Gibson, young ace Albert Ball, Billy Bishop, the man who fought like a dervish--Billy Barker, and the man who never killed anyone, but won two VC's--Noel Coward, the Gurkhas who were the dread of every army in Asia, the family of soldiers that collected medals like baseball cards, the Danish soldier who fought with a knife and bow in WWI, or was it WWII?
I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in heroes, combat, or just a good read.

Many of the men found in de la Billiere's book are well-known names: Along with detailed descriptions of the VC-winning actions, the book provides incisive portraits of the winners, warts and all!
