She has romantic interactions both positive and negative, to varying degrees with FOUR separate guys in this book First off, the ups and downs of their relationship far overshadowed any boy drama in the book for this alone, I want to hug Meredith Zeitlin. They're unique without being stereotypically quirky, and I loved the realistic, ever-changing dynamic of the girls as they grew up and apart and together again.

Plus, how they argued and got mad at each other was hilariously spot-on with how girls fight in high school. Yeah, Kelsey has those.

Plus, she's dealing with issues like how far she wants to go with boys, how to let her best friend know that it's ok if she's a lesbian, and how to handle alcohol at a party. All of this is included with humor and depth and no preachy message or judgment whatsoever. In conclusion, Kelsey rocks.

For the rest of us, it's just a good time! This review was originally posted on [ One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. I would preface this review by saying this is generally not the genre of literature that I usually read. However, a friend of mine suggested I read it because I shared a common last name with one of the characters in the book, and boy am I happy I did.

I started Freshman Year and Other Unnatural Disasters on sunday afternoon and finished it by early monday morning. The writing and characters are addictive and once you start reading the book it is hard to put down. The author expertly draws you into the world of her characters and you quickly find yourself rooting for the protagonist Kelsey, whether it is when she is fighting with her friends, arguing with her mom, being pested by her sister, or wistfully hoping that something happens to make her life more exciting.

I think that all readers can relate to fights with their best friends, awkard teenage moments and wishing there life was just a bit more fabulous. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a nice fun read.

She is hilariously self-centered as any YA ought to be and yet entirely lovable at the same time. I found myself thinking like a thirteen year old whenever I closed the book to leave the subway. One of the things I found enchanting about this book is what it must be like to grow up in Brooklyn. I know what it's like to live here as an adult, but what's that childhood like?

I found myself enthralled with this little girl's obstacles, her ups and downs. If that's not enough, Zeitlin has a sharp edged humor that just kicks my ass. Two thumbs up and five stars. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I went in with no expectations but was blown away. The characters are warm and well rounded and the author made me care about them almost from page 1. I was drawn into the plot and totally invested in the outcome of the story. I can't wait to read the sequel now! Just ordered a copy Kelsey is my new BFF!

Freshman Year is a truly fun read. It's the kind of book I wish had been out when I was younger. If I had had this book as a guide I could have handled all of my own freshman disasters with a bit more aplomb Kelsey takes you along for a ride that feels both familiar and fresh all at once. It's the high school angst we all felt, delivered by a witty, relatable narrator. I, for one, am looking forward to reading more of Kelsey's adventures.

I wonder what sophomore year holds? This coming-of-age novel will not only entertain but also educate those transitioning into high school. It is a quick read bound to appeal to a female audience. The values of good friendships are further evidenced in the honesty Kelsey and Cass show when they reconcile.

In a sweet reversal, Kelsey finds that one of her many disasters has introduced her to a new guy who is, indeed, worth the wait. Kelsey and I would definitely have been friends. Also by Meredith Zeitlin. See all books by Meredith Zeitlin.
