This is a wonderfully written book with layers of history, adventure, tragedy, triumph and humor all brilliantly weaved together to tell the author's amazing story. It's interesting because I was reading Tina Fey's Bossy Pants at the same time and I thought, although Fey is funny, there is something about the way Mendoza writes that allows her to illustrate the comedy in situations much better than Fey an SNL writer and producer of her own sitcom! Perhaps it is the raw reality of Mendoza's experiences vs. The two are different genres about two entirely different women and probably shouldn't be compared, but it was one thing that stood out while I happened to be reading both of these books at the same time.

This is also an important book for anyone interested in gendered experiences of women dealing with mental illness. The levels of abuse, disempowerment, as well as opportunities for empowerment and love are arguably quite different from what men would experience.

Something to think about, particularly for people working in mental health programs. I met a lady on a ship who was reading this book and said it was simply terrific, both funny and profound and a truly great read, as gripping as the best of mysteries. She said I had to read it. So I downloaded it and it turns out it is everything she said it was, plus it gave me real insight into the craziness of someone close to me. This book is both interesting and incredibly insightful. Mendoza's life is full of crazy twists and turns but not unlike so many people's own experiences.

The book was well written, witty and heartwarming, and worth the time! See all 9 reviews.

Instead of continuing to fall backwards in life, the author managed to keep taking two steps forward, always gathering her warrior energies to do so. The author's story was compelling in its delivery and its description of agoraphobia. I found myself feeling great respect for not only her courage but also for the way in which the author shared her story. This memoir is raw, emotional, and inciteful. There are sweet connections throughout.

From Agoraphobia To Zen Uncovering The Core Of My Anxiety And Reclaiming My Life

Marilyn Mendoza's memoir is a beautifully written saga of one person's perseverance to victory over physical and mental illness and the neglect and abuse by the people who should have loved her. I have read dozens of memoirs, and this is one of the most inspiring. As you turn the pages you can't wait to see how she can possibly survive, but she does and writes to tell about it. Not only does she recover, she forgives those who made her suffer.

Anyone who is facing abuse or mental illness should read this. This book is both powerful and poignant. You feel for Marilyn's lifelong struggle with agoraphobia. You can't help but root for her to not only overcome this mental illness but also dealing with other tragedies in her life.

Especially memorable is the stories about her mother and the mental illness she was struggling with. But this isn't just a book about sad tales, there are so many light-hearted moments and plenty of laughs. You will get a kick out of Marilyn's father and his , ahem "extra-curricular" activities. This is a wonderful, compelling and passionate book.

Marilyn expertly weaves a tale that reads more like a mystery with plenty of humor and fond memories of her life growing up in Brooklyn NY all the way to her wonderful life now in Hawaii. If you ever wonder what life is like living with a mental illness or want to better understand what agoraphobia is and why it can be so difficult this book is a good place to start. This is a wonderfully written book with layers of history, adventure, tragedy, triumph and humor all brilliantly weaved together to tell the author's amazing story.
