We were always recruiting the Montagnards. We had interpreters that helped with the language barrier. A lot of SF people got very close with the Montagnards. When I was in Vietnam, I was wounded four times.

The first time I was wounded, I got shrapnel in my neck from a B rocket, but I never told my captain or my team sergeant that I got wounded. I just kept going. You get bonded with all these people.

Later, I had a gunshot wound in my wrist and my leg. The time I was wounded in the wrist, I was wearing a couple of Montagnard bracelets they give them as friendship bracelets.

The bullet hit one of the bracelets and it slowed the velocity of the bullet. My wrist, my hand or half my arm should have just been blown away but the bracelet slowed it. I have some numbness and loss of motion in my hand, but I was really lucky. After we left, a group of Montagnards kept fighting in Vietnam.
