Discussing the effects of color in film may seems natural to members of a society conditioned to watching a lot of movies, but what this exemplifies to me as a scholar is that as people become more cultured through media— film as a discourse continues to develop as our sources of entertainment adapt to keep us entertained; movies become more psychologically intricate and I think this continues to generate a growing body of movie viewers who appreciate the finer aspects of film production.

To me, Psychoanalytic Theory then becomes about making better movies by better engaging audiences. Leave a comment. Posted in Blog Entry Tagged Blog 11 , David Martinez. The psychoanalysis theory is fairly recent concept. This psychoanalytic theory is best demonstrated by Aronofsky using the doppelganger effect. A doppelganger is known as a shift or split in personality of the protagonist.

The idea and truth of reality throughout the film is skewed perfectly exemplifying the doppelganger effect. The struggle of transforming from an innocent and graceful ballerina to the rigid, careless black swan is extremely difficult, as each role lies on two different ends of the spectrum. Aronofsky captures the transition every step of the way through the use of costume and color. As Nina says in the movie, the story of Swan Lake describes how a little girl gets turned into a swan needs love to break the spell, but her prince falls for the wrong girl and she ends up killing herself.

There are two main characters: the white swan and the black swan the little girl and the swan she is cursed into. The costume required for the each role symbolizes the sweet versus dark character. White swan wears something you might envision a typical ballerina prancing around stage in, tutu, sequins, and a feathered hairpiece. As black swan, Nina wears a black leotard and tutu with black wings not shown. Her makeup is done with a porcelain base, with eyeliner and black eye shadow shading her eyes.

Only the fire colored red pupil is visible through a mask-like disguise of makeup. The colors remain simple, black and white with a few colors in small spaces to add a pop, like the pupils.

An almost horrifying image, Natalie Portman completely indulges herself in this dark role, becoming a character that can give any viewer goose bumps. Having extreme makeup plastered to her face, combined with a feathered inhumane outfit, Aronofsky instills threat and sense of fear into the viewer. The contrast of black and white creates a more dramatic scene and gives the viewer a clear understanding of the transition between two different characters. Throughout the film, the colors are generally dark and faded but keep the black and white color scheme to send a chill through to the viewers.

Through countless hallucinations and personality shifts, Aronofsky utilizes the simplistic color palate and distinct costume choices to develop a strong emotional reaction from the viewer and to invite them into this emotive escapade. But audience members never really notice how much analyzing they are actually doing while watching the film.

In all areas of entertainment, especially film, the audience is interacting and immersing themselves within the film a lot more then they think. By dressing his character Nina Sayers in all pink within the beginning of the film, Black Swan , Aronofsky is appealing to the audiences idea of innocence, childhood, and pre-defined expressions of gender.

Nina can be seen at various times in the film wearing pink scarves while walking from the ballet to her house, sleeping in a pink bedroom that is also filled with pink stuffed animals, and tediously tying her pink ballet slippers.

What is Psychological Criticism?

They are either rooting or booing for her to become an adult while also recounting the times that they had done something similar. Everyone grows up at some point, and to be able to watch Nina do it only within two hours, brings up a lot of old memories or future ambitions about what it means to really grow up. Here is the link to this weeks reading that talks about the audience having an unconsciousness.

Psychoanalysis has not been around for a terribly long time, but like most psychological practices and fields, it has many supporters and haters. What the mirror stage is supporting is a break in conscious thought and understanding of the baby as separate from the mother.

Sound familiar, right? The baby can now recognize via the copy in the mirror that he or she is outside and objectively separate from the mother. The mirrored double, the reflected self, then becomes an obsessive interest. We become interested in ourselves, what we look like, how we move, etc. This seems to be what is happening to Nina as the film progresses, however belatedly it may be. The fact that Aronofsky consistently uses black and white and all the grey scales inbetween!! Throughout the entire film she is looking into mirrors and pulling herself away from the identity of her mother or the person her mom wants her to be and into her own person.

Magnified inspections with the more intense mirrors give her focus and direction to her gaze.
